"Ahska, you must hurry." Shahn was nervous, as well she should be. This was a monumental day on Etimon, one that hopefully would occur only once in the aide's lifetime.
"I am almost done. Please, Shahn, give me time."
Shahn's expression softened. "Of course." She folded her hands on her lap and waited.
Eventually, Ahska stepped out of the other room and smoothed her hands down the beautiful silk gown.
"Oh," Shahn breathed. "That is beautiful."
"Starfleet," Ahska replied. "Chloe was the first to show me silk. I don't think I can live without it now."
Shahn got up and made her way over to Ahska. Hesitantly, she lifted a hand, then looked to her for approval. Ahska smiled and nodded. As Shahn drew her hand delicately over the fabric, she sighed. "It must feel wonderful on your skin."
"You may have it after today," Ahska said. "Dye it another color and no one will know." She looked at the door and swallowed as she picked up the thin jeweled headband and placed it on her head. Shahn helped adjust it until it sat perfectly among the upswept curls.
The door opened and Esohn entered. "He looks very handsome," Shahn said, blushing behind Ahska.
"Shahn!" Ahska turned and gave her friend a disapproving glance.
"But he does."
Facing Esohn, Ahska was forced to agree. Though the man was much older, he carried himself well and his uniform enhanced his broad shoulders.
"Are you ready," he asked, holding out his hand.
Nodding, Ahska placed her palm in his and he lead her out of the room, down the hall, and into the courtyard. Hundreds of Etimonians had gathered, brought there by a message from the royal compound. As Ahska stepped into the sunlight, a collective gasp rose up at the sight of her. The breeze caught one of the pure white tendrils that hung by her cheek and her gown, of a matching color, followed suit, blowing softly about her.
She waited for them to quiet, then looked up at Esohn briefly. He nodded and she faced the crowd. "Vildar Etheron is no more," she replied. "His memories, and those of my ancestors are within me." Cries rose up, some in anguish over the passing of the ruler, others with questions as to the cause.
"The circumstances are of no concern at the moment," Esohn said, his deep, authoritative voice cutting through the crowd. Shahn appeared at their side and, as Esohn continued, she placed another headband into Ahska's hair. The designs mingled together, forming one. "May I present Hezak Ahska," Esohn said in a joyous voice.
Shahn handed Ahska something behind her back and Ahska took in a deep breath before bringing it forward. Reaching up, she placed it on Esohn's left chest, clasping it to his uniform.
"No," someone shouted out from the crowd.
Ahska lifted her chin, but her voice was shaking. "Vildar Esohn," she said. "My mate."
The crowd was in a turmoil until Esohn's voice yet again silenced them. "This is a new beginning for Etimon," he said, his smile radiant on his tanned face. "Please join us for a celebration." The doors into the palace opened and guards gestured for everyone to come inside. "Feast in honor of Etheron, and drink in joy at our union." A grand buffet was set up, with soft music courtesy of a string quartet. Ahska and Esohn took their places at the far end of the grand hall.
"I need a drink," Shahn muttered as she melted into the crowd. Seconds later, a message announcing the tragedy was on its way to Etaera on SGE.
