The Talon had been in the process of chasing ghosts about the Gamma Quadrant for nearly a month, and M’Khol was becoming quite frustrated with it all. As best as they could tell, it was some sort of cloaked vessel, but no matter how much he tried to understand the mechanics of the cloak, or how to properly track it, he couldn’t. So it came as somewhat of a relief when the Talon was given a new assignment - to aid one of Etimon’s allies against the Mehtak.
The details that they’d been given were somewhat sparse, since all communication from the planet had been scrambled for nearly a week. But the last message to reach Etimon from Maeri spoke of repeated attacks by the Mehtak, who were trying to strip Maeri of the various ores that the planet possessed. Unfortunately, it had been so heavily scrambled that it had taken several days to understand what information the message had contained.
Long range sensor scans had shown that there weren’t any Mehtak ships in orbit of Maeri, but M’Khol knew that was a temporary condition. Chances were that the Mehtak were so confident of their assault on Maeri that they did not find the need to leave ships behind while they transported ore back to their own home planet. As the Talon drew nearer, it was confirmed that there were no Mehtak vessels, and M’Khol had given the order to go to yellow alert, and assume standard orbit of the planet. He knew that the Mehtak weren’t going to merely abandon Maeri, at least not until she’d been completely stripped of everything valuable.
“Bridge to Captain Alexander,” he said. “We have arrived in orbit of Maeri.”
