Zakary crawled through jefferies tubes heading towards the area that had been whim to the alien's destructive arrival on board. The engineers were busy and security was curious with a spare officer hanging around. How exactly the aliens got inside was difficult to deduce considering as far as they know, their shields hadn't failed at anypoint thus far.
The young officer already had his phaser out, just in case more of the aliens chose to enter the same-way. He reached the end of the tunnel before tapping in the controls to open the access hatch where he poked his head in to look down the long dark shaft, barely illuminated as it had been before.
It was a wonder how Cobus and O'Connel hadn't been more seriously hurt in the explosion. Zak craned his head to look up towards where the hole was that the aliens had cut through. He couldn't see it from this angle but he opted to check the lift first.
Zak holstered his weapon and shifted to ease himself out onto the ladder, slowly descending until he hit the rungs that had been half melted or disintegrated. He stopped there, wrapping one arm over a secure rung, hanging there as he used his free hand to get his tricorder out to scan the lift and its stability.
He wrinkled his nose as the subtle aroma of melted and charred metal filled his nostrils. Satisfied with the results of the tricorder, Zak pushed himself off from the ladder, landing on a small plate of metal that still retained the shape it was designed into. The clanks and quiet creaks might have alarmed others, but it was merely the stress of his bodyweight causing it. He was not about to fall through what remained of the lift's ceiling, he wasn't nearly heavy enough for that. At least he hoped not.
Zak placed a hand on the metal underneath, tempting cuts on his fingers by brushing them almost against the edge. The metal rounded upwards, suggesting the explosion had more concussive power rather than pure destruction, as if it was trying to get somewhere. A critical system no doubt.
The bulkheads around him gave a sudden gearing whine, Zak froze for a moment, allowing the sound to pass. He shouldn't stay down here for very long though he could have sworn he heard something else, like a quiet cling clang from above. Maybe engineering had finally sent someone down here too. Relaxing the grip on his phaser, Zak continued to feel around, simotenously using his tricorder to pick up clues to the explosion's properties.
