Chloe made for her battle station the moment the warnings went off. The duty flight crews were already finishing up a battle check. She knew Marta wouldn’t be coming. She was on leave for a family emergency and hadn’t even been aboard when Talon left the station.
Her temporary replacement, Ensign Brock was a no show and when she tried to contact him found the guy in sickbay. By that time the special probe was being delivered and installed in Romeo’s cargo bay.
They were running leads to a makeshift station halfway back into the aft section of the small ship.
“Who’s going to be deploying that probe?”
“Sorry,” the crewman said. “I have no idea.”
“Well they better get here soon,” she replied as she went through her checklist. “ I can’t pilot this craft and deploy that probe myself the way it’s set up.”
He just shrugged and finished his task. Before she knew it he’d ducked out the hatch. She heard voices outside in the shuttle bay but other than the normal give and take of the crew no one was speaking directly to her.
“Flight Control,” she reported into the bridge. “Shuttle Romeo is prepped and ready with the probe, standing by for guidance officer. Sir, I don’t have someone here to let this thing loose once we get clear of the debris field.”
“One moment Romeo,” came the crisp reply. “We’re getting you that officer.”
“Thank you flight,” she replied and shifted over to Marta’s seat just to hit up a couple of steps in the checklist.
She could fly this shuttle alone as long as she didn’t have to run tactical as well in a long running battle. She’d feel more comfortable if she had someone else along but it wasn’t required.
It seemed like several minutes had gone by before she reached out again for the comm. “Flight? Any news on that officer?”
