Kinin woke slowly, her brain still in that comfortable, drug-induced haze of half-wakefulness where one feels as if they are floating in a warm cloud. Yaxley had released her hours ago, on the condition that she head straight to her quarters and right to bed. Hawkins had agreed to cover her shift, so she was free to sleep through the morning. She rolled over, her hand reaching for Dorian, but all she felt were cold sheets.
"Computer," she said. "Location of Captain Alexander."
"Captain Alexander is on the MacBeth."
"Ah," Kinin said, rolling onto her back. She looked under the covers and realized she still wore the dress from the evening before. Maybe he had taken a joy ride around Etimon after the party and decided to sleep onboard.
Slipping out of bed, she padded barefoot to the bathroom and removed her clothes, tossing them into the recycling unit. She turned on the water shower and let it get warm while she combed the tangles out of her hair. Stepping into the shower, she let the water run softly over her body for a moment before adjusting the jets to a more powerful massage setting. Her mind began to push aside the sleepy haze and the events of the evening before flooded back to her. Dorian and Ahska. Kinin squeezed her eyes closed. It was his right, after all.
Soaping up her hands, she ran them over her body but stopped as she felt the subtle swelling of her abdomen. Their son would be happy, no matter what life threw at him. This, Kinin vowed then and there. She would teach him that true honor would be found in one's heart, not in the narrow minds of others.
Finished with her shower, she toweled off and wrapped her hair into a high, damp pony-tail, then put on a simple pair of shorts and tank top. She stood in the middle of the room. "This won't do," she said.
Kinin began rearranging the furniture... again.
