"Work faster, got it."
"Pretty much," she replied, in equal good humour. Yes, it was a serious situation, but that was no reason to have to be stoic.
"Alright, let's see if we can get this ship off the ground. Ensign, you stay on those shields. Isolate the frequency and find out if this single frequency business is a design flaw or a personal choice."
She nodded.
"Or maybe they can't..." He mulled that over, looking at the way the system was configured. "If they can't change it, then..." He smiled triumphantly. "Then we have an advantage!"
"That sounds like exactly the sort of design flaw we like," she said. "Ensign Haywood, Smith, come in here, please." A moment later they appeared. "Get the shield frequency of this vessel and take them back to the Talon," she said to Smith. "Tell them that's the number they need."
He nodded, requested a beamout and a moment later disappeared into a cloud of sparkles.
Kathryn looked back at the others.
"Let's get this show on the road, then," she said, looking around for the console that looked most like a conn. Usually they were to be found near the front of a bridge, but it seemed there was a console in that room that would do the trick.
"OK... sealing up the ship for flight... Rok, I'll leave whatever preflights you think necessary in your capable hands. Haywood, grab and console and try and make some sense of their weapons arrays." She tapped over a few buttons. "Engaging... banana?" She shook her head. "Someone needs to work on the Mehtak translation algorithms."
She glanced over at Dakbar.
"Since you seem to be a whizz with these shields, maybe you can make sure they stay functioning?" she asked, with a slight smile. "And I daresay we'll have ground crews in trouble, so it probably wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for any officers in distress. There's plenty of room to go around up here."
Assuming the ship didn't blow itself apart once they got airborne, of course.
"Ship's sealed," she said, continuing the commentary for the benefit of the others. "Firing up the engines and... up we go."
She pulled up the tactical readout, or what she thought looked most like it, next to the flight controls. As they rose into the air, she frowned at the red dots heading in their direction.
"Haywood, you're on," she said.
"Yes, ma'am," he replied, and fired the Mehtak weapons towards the enemy ships.
Kathryn wasn't planning on sticking around to see how successful the shots were, and immediately they shot forwards, darting away from the oncoming ships and off towards the other continent where the firefight was taking place. In the ship it didn't take long; a few minutes later they'd arrived on the edge of the combat zone.
"Looks like the Romeo is up in the fray as well," she noted. "Make sure you don't hit her on the way. Might be a good idea to let them know who we are so they don't decide to send a volley in our direction." She bit her lip thoughtfully. "Try and do it covertly? I'd rather not give us away to the Mehtak until we absolutely have to."
She looked over at Dakbar.
"We've probably got a minute or two before they realise we're not one of the gang," she said. "If you're going to pull anyone off the ground, now's probably the best time."
