"We will speak soon, yes?"
Before Ahska could reply, Esohn answered for her. "The Hezak will be in seclusion as is our custom. I would hope you would respect that."
Ahska closed her eyes. The thought of being shut away wasn't as comforting as she had thought it would be. At least it would stall the consummation of their union for a time. When she looked up, Yaxley was gone. She hoped he had not taken offense.
“Hezak Ahska. Your mother would be so proud of you. Vildar Etheron would have been as well.”
Renewed tears formed in her eyes.
“Vildar Esohn, though the circumstances are terrible, I couldn’t imagine a better choice for Vildar.”
This was all so wrong. Esohn was Rethik, leader of the soldiers, not Vildar. Even Zakhara should realize that. Suddenly, Ahska felt very much alone. With no mother or father, and now Esohn as a complete stranger to her in his new role, she had no one to whom she could depend. As if on cue, Shahn's hand rested on her shoulder briefly.
"Thank you for coming," Esohn said to Zakhara. "We all know you are very busy on the station. Now that the one who signed the treaty has passed, new negotiations will need to take place. I would like you to be involved in the-"
"There is no need," Ahska said firmly.
Esohn frowned and waved back the onlookers. They all moved backwards out of earshot, but there was nothing stopping them from watching. Those who straggled were helped along by the hand of the soldiers nearby. Esohn lowered his voice. "What do you mean?"
"I signed a new Treaty."
"Let me-"
"It is already in the hands of the Federation."
Esohn's face turned red with anger. "We will discuss this later. Now is not the time."
Shahn smiled briefly, then approached Zakhara. "Will you remain? I can fetch another chair."
