Starting work somewhere new was never easy for anyone, not even someone like Lia Barlow.
It really didn't matter that in essence her job was very much the same as it had always been; the new station with the new staff and the new civilians and the new challenges and problems... it could just as well be a new job, for what little was the same.
Your name, your rank, your history.
Such things preceeded her, she knew, as they did most everywhere she went. And if she came across those who didn't know her reputation? She made sure they soon would.
She'd arrived ahead of her transfer orders, at personal request. It never hurt to know people who could pull strings to keep the element of surprise firmly in your favour. When you reached the ranks at which Starfleet stopped telling and started requesting, it was amazing what a few well-placed words could do. It was always good to know her years as Admirals' aides hadn't been wasted.
She'd spent the journey to SGE reading up on anything she could find, much to Greg's mild amusement and, she suspected, slight irritation. Still, at least she felt she had a vague understanding of the station's layout and her senior staff.
Their short sabbatical had reminded her of everything she so keenly missed from her unexpected year's holiday, not least her husband's attitude towards domestic chores. He'd taken to fatherhood as well as she'd suspected he might too, and she hoped his attention to their home life would remain as devoted despite their relocation.
Pushing thoughts of Greg and her daughter into the back of her mind for the time being, she rode the turbolift to the command centre.
Remember, you only get the one chance to make a first impression.
The doors opened and she walked out, studiously avoiding the eyes that turned her way.
"As you were," she said, to the couple of officers who'd begun the stand to attention at her arrival. "Governor, Commander. Could we have a word in my office?"
She smiled genially, then turned and walked into the aforementioned office, leaving the others to follow.
Welcome to Gamma Etimon, Lia.
