Rychel had been a nervous wreck over the course of the past day. Mere moments after receiving a shiny new pip on her collar, she’d caught wind of the rumor mill. Talon was missing. She’d watched the flow of communications in and out of the station like a hawk, desperate for any trace of the ship, and her friends aboard.
I didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye, she thought sadly to herself. The training opportunity that she’d been offered at SGE came too quickly, she’d not even had time to get her affairs in order before leaving. I was only supposed to be gone a week at most, though, she reasoned.
As soon as word had come that the Talon had returned, Rychel had quickly returned to her quarters there. Aside from a few things that had been tossed about, they looked exactly the same as they’d been before she left. Checking her messages, she saw that many of Talon’s crew had departed for leave, with the brunt of the repairs falling to the SGE Engineers. There was a list of Talon engineers who had volunteered to stay behind and assist, but after all the studying she’d done, Rychel felt that she deserved a break.
After a bit of consideration, she’d decided to head to the phaser range. She’d managed to squeeze in a few minute’s time to talk to Desan, and he’d advised her to be extra cautious. As if I’m not cautious enough already, she thought. Still, his demeanor wasn’t that of the normal overprotective brother. Something was clearly deeply troubling him, and she suspected it had a lot to do with the amount of danger she’d found herself in as of recent.
Shucking her regular duty uniform, she changed into surface operation blacks, grinning a bit as she transferred over her pips. As she departed her quarters, she made sure to take the precautions that Dakbar had requested of her, making sure that no one unexpected could either walk or beam inside. She knew it was more for her peace of mind than for any real security protection. The people that wanted to harm her would find a way around anything she could do.
Stop worrying, she chided herself. Desan, Gav, Dakbar... all of them were keeping an eye on her. They would be her real protection.
Arriving at the phaser range a few moments later, she checked out a phaser rifle from the weapons locker, and slung it over her back. Ever since the intruder had broken into her quarters, she’d carried a type 2 with her at all times, and she verified that it was set to low stun. That would ensure that the weapon didn’t die out too quickly over the course of her practice. She removed the type 1 that she’d concealed in her boot as per Desan’s direction, and set that to stun as well.
After situating all three weapons, she started a moderate-level difficulty simulation. “Computer, begin simulation,” she ordered. The computer beeped in response, and her first target appeared. It was a Jem Hadar warrior, in full battle gear, carrying a plasma rifle. In a flash, her phaser rifle was in her hands, and she squeezed off a shot, hitting the Jem Hadar square in the center of his chest. As the holoprojection disappeared, she grinned proudly, before taking on a focused, stern posture.
The second Jem Hadar appeared a good distance behind where the first had appeared, and immediately began charging towards Rychel to get better range to shoot her with the plasma pistol he carried. Rychel deftly sidestepped behind a combat shield that was to her right, and lifted her phaser rifle to sight the Jem Hadar. She aimed quickly, and squeezed off another shot, this one striking her attacker in the shoulder. He flinched, sparing a brief glance at the injury before focusing on Rychel once more. But the gesture had bought the Lieutenant all the time she needed, and her second shot hit true.
As the second Jem Hadar dissipated, she removed her hand from the grip of her weapon, clenching her fist quickly to reduce some of the tension that had built up in her muscles. She returned to proper position just as the third Jem Hadar appeared. This one was off to the side, and she had to step around the shield she was using for cover in order to allow it to provide adequate coverage. This gave the Jem Hadar a moment to squeeze off a shot that singed her hair ever so slightly.
Careful now, she chided herself. Though there were safety protocols in place, a blast from the hologram’s phaser rifle would still leave a mark. Her next shot struck the approaching Jem Hadar in the throat, and he gurgled for a moment before disappearing.
