It was quiet in security, as it had been for most of the shifts for the last two months since they'd reemerged from the void. As they'd been under repairs for a good portion of the time, there had been little in the way of excitement for the security team.
But Kathryn didn't mind; you could train just as well whether there was some crisis going on or not - better, really, when you could take the time to stop and correct your mistakes rather than just carrying on and hoping it didn't happen again.
In the last couple of weeks, she'd taken the opportunity to renew some of her weapons certifications, and to get in some practice at hand to hand combat in the gym. It seemed that there were a growing number of women on board from the more technical departments who were interested in learning some more-than-basic self defence, and Kathryn was always happy to share what she knew if people wanted to learn. It never hurt to know how to defend yourself in a fight. Quite the opposite, in fact.
But today, she was based in the security office, planning a weapons inventory. There were many lockers throughout the ship with a variety of phasers, phaser rifles and so on on them, and they all required regular testing to make sure that they were functioning to the best of their ability in case of an emergency. It wasn't a glamorous job by any means, but Kathryn understood the importance of it.
Besides, it was one of the few jobs in security where the likelihood of chipping a nail were fairly low, so that was something in its favour.
"You've got deck six," she said to the two ensigns in front of her, neither of which looked quite so upbeat about the task ahead of them.
"Yes ma'am," replied one, obviously trying not to sound unenthusiastic for fear of a rebuke.
"When you're done with that, check in with me and I'll tell you which to head to next." Maybe the mystery would keep their interest.
Probably not.
They left, leaving Kathryn alone for the time being, following the progress of the various teams on the first few decks. They didn't need much in the way of supervision, so she busied herself with checking over the department's own equipment as she waited.
