Maybe it was the thought of the time off that drove her back to their quarters but she got there quickly. Chloe was still holding her side when she finally walked in the door.
The final items had arrived and a crewman was setting up the furniture she'd ordered and another picking up the packing materials.
Van had gotten the extra room configured like she'd asked and it opened across the living area from their room. He'd seemed so hesitant but she'd wanted the decorations to be a surprise so she hadn't really explained. She imagined he probably had figured out what she wanted the room for. After all the baby was due in just two weeks.
She walked into the nursery and ran a loving hand over the back of the rocking chair. The bed was together and had been made up with the linens she'd ordered. The young woman was just putting up the mobile of little puffy lady bugs.
"Oh that looks wonderful," she smiled.
The room was all decorated in red and white with big red poka dots up on one side of the wall near the one window, with smaller ones scattered around.
She smiled and walked over to the crib. "It's just the way I described it," she smiled. "Thank you."
The young woman just smiled and nodded. Then picking up the last of the packing materials she left.
Chloe sat down in the rocking chair and just gazed around the room. She would soon know if their baby was a boy or a girl, and she was beginning to get anxious. So far she'd avoided every attempt by the helpful staff to tell her what it was. But that wasn't going to last forever.
She had wanted to keep that much from their experience on the planet. The uncertainty and joy of finding out what their baby was when it was born. Of course she had no idea if Van had done the same. She knew he was as eager at this point as she was.
Suddenly a little tired, she lay her head back on the red cushion as she rocked and hummed a lullaby.
