"I am Starfleet. If I go, it is only to get our people back."
That got Liz's attention. She glanced over her shoulder at Kinin, taking in the other Klingon's set expression. So she was going somewhere, was she? Liz could think of about fifteen very good reasons as to why they shouldn't let her do that, and about fourteen of them had to do with the Captain and how happy he wouldn't be when he got back if they did. She had no desire to lose her station because Kinin thought it was her job to fix this.
"What is it,"
The Commander's question brought Liz's mind back to the task at hand, almost as much as the sudden appearance of Griffon at her shoulder did. "It's an energy signal, sir," she said. "Unknown vector, and I can't isolate the type of it, but if we can latch onto it..." she trailed off, staring at the sensors. And then, just to punctuate how angry she was at the moment, she hit her console. Something blatted at her indignantly. Taking a deep breath, mentally promising herself that the holodeck and a good stiff drink were in her future, she continued. "Never mind. It's gone, sir."
Damn. She curled her fingers into a fist on one hand, and felt her nails digging into her palm. Where were they. Where the hell...
//"Star to Bridge, we've found one transmitter-like device so far. Lieutenant Dakbar is handling the device. Will keep you posted."//
Liz's head came up again, a hopeful spark flaring in her eyes. They had one. She could get it, could find its signal, could trace it. Maybe. At the very least, she could try to trigger the thing to reveal what it had learned thanks to its position. It was better than nothing.
And then, to make her life just a teensy bit better, Emmarie showed up. Liz listened with half her mind as the Lieutenant began scanning the device she'd found. Truth be told, Liz really wanted to get her hands on it, and get busy doing something. "I’ve run thorough scans, the metal used is consistent with Klingon technology, although I’ve never seen a device quite like this. According to the logs, a low powered transporter beam transported it into his quarters two hours ago.”
Two hours ago. Why hadn't she thought to check that far back, to see...well, of course. That made sense. Sneak something in earlier, when all the transporting was going on anyway, while they were shuffling supplies around. The shields were down, the entire ship focused on getting a stupid moon built, and then all they'd have to do is route the returning transport through the transmitter, not through the ship's systems. They'd be blind. They had been. It was a bit of genius, that, and it meant that whoever had done this knew quite a bit about Starfleet systems. Just their luck.
"I need fully operation sensors. Move us away from the planet if we have to."
"Aye sir," Liz said. There was a task she could handle. All this cloak-and-dagger, sneaking around in the dark sort of stuff, trying to find somebody who was hiding themselves like...it just wasn't fair. That was the end of that. Liz turned to the sensor systems, a teensy bit relieved, and began working on getting them fully operational. Lieutenant Emmarie had already finished boosting power as much as was possible, all the excess auxiliary power feeding directly into them. She just had to get it so that they could see details. Maybe she'd be able to isolate that elusive power trail again. Probably not, but it was worth a try.
