“Just a bit further...” Rychel said to herself as she clung precariously to the rungs of a ladder inside of a Jefferies tube. The outermost layers of her uniform had already been tossed aside, leaving her clad in her gray undershirt and trousers, and her hair had been haphazardly pulled back in a makeshift bun to keep it out of her way. Letting go with both hands, she held on with her legs as she hung almost perfectly perpendicular from the ladder. Her abdominal muscles protested this exercise vehemently, but she ignored, pushing herself to extend just a hair further to reach the power coupling she was trying to replace.
“They really didn’t design these things for short people,” she complained, pushing a strand of red hair from her eyes. The act caused her to bobble the microspanner that she held, almost dropping the tool. She juggled it from hand to hand for a long moment before regaining her grasp on it and taking a deep breath.
Focus, ‘Chel. It had been over two months since her last trip to Sickbay, and as much as she liked Sig, she really hated ended up on his biobeds. Steadying herself, she went to work at the power coupling, deftly removing the non-functional one and setting it down on one of the ladder’s rungs.
As she did so, she looked down, and saw the 3 deck drop down the tube. She grasped onto the ladder with both hands and took deep, steadying breaths. While she wasn’t precisely phobic of heights or falls, ever since the accident she’d been made more aware of her own mortality.
Looking about, she realized that the replacement part was still sitting in her toolbox a deck below. With a sigh, she carefully began to descend.
