Kinin sat at the security desk that rested between the rows of cells in the brig. Lying on the table before here were all of the devices that had been retrieved from the shuttles, as well as the device that had been found by Emmarie. There were visible differences between the two styles. The ones from the shuttle had been created with the sole purpose of sending and receiving messages at a preset time. The other had been simply a beacon, meant to target a particular individual. Both were ingenious and had been thoroughly examined by ops and engineering before being turned over to security. Unfortunately, something had been wrong with the ones from the shuttles, all gathered by Lieutenant Dakbar when the away teams returned, and all immediately turned over to engineering. The chain of transfer had been completely routine. She pushed aside the shuttle transmitters and stared at the one item remaining.
Earlier that morning, the alarm in her quarters had sounded and she woke with a start, a deep dream interrupted. She reached forward to the other side of the bed, but her hand fell only onto the cold sheets. He was gone. Her heart, her soul, her mate, was still gone. Her fingers grabbed the sheets and ripped them toward her, as if she could pull him back from the abyss. Sitting up in bed, she let the tears flow, her green eyes staring out into the darkness of the lonely room.
Now, as she picked up the beacon, she prayed once again for it to take her away, too, so that they could be together again.
"If you are to come, it must be of your own accord; honor demands it."
The message haunted her. No one had allowed her to go and now the trail had grown cold, if there was even one to begin with. She thought of their last fight. She had demanded his blind trust in her, and she had questioned his loyalty. Was the message from Dorian? Had he asked for her own trust, only to have her stay on the ship? Where were her loyalties? Were they to the Federation, or with her mate who might not even be alive because she had not followed? She had pledged her heart to him on Qo'noS. Was he now thinking she had betrayed him by staying behind?
"Honor demands it."
Rubbing a hand over her face, she put the device back down with the other hand. What had the Federation given her? Heartache? Pain? She shook her head sharply. "Honor," she whispered quietly. It had given her honor. Angrily, she pushed the beacon into the pile with the transmitters before she could smash it with her fist.
