Hunter stood in an open field on a slight rise above a valley that spread out for miles below him. A soft, warm breeze ruffled his dark hair and he inhaled deeply. Already, the rest of the landing party was getting to work. A fleet of ships had dropped cargo weeks ago and the construction of Gamma Prime had begun behind him. Already, the basic shape of the structure was up, but the infrastructure was still not quite finished. As he surveyed the area with a scientific mind, he knew the area had been well-chosen. No sentient lifeforms existed, the planet had abundant water, and this region showed no signs of any sort of tectonic activity, severe weather, or anything else that would prevent the Federation from establishing their very first colony.
He could see the fleet disappearing through the atmosphere. They had left behind some workers, mostly heavy labor, but had unexpectedly departed early at the request of Starfleet.
"I've got a bad feeling about that."
Hunter started, surprised by the voice beside him. "Mm," Hunter nodded. "Something's up," he said. "This colony is too important to the Federation. To leave the job half done, and call us in to do it, just doesn't make sense."
"Maybe they wanted Talon to do something..." The guy considered the right way to say it. "I don't know...constructive."
Hunter frowned at the man. "What we do is always-"
"No no," the guy interrupted. "I didn't mean it like that. It's just that, well..." He shrugged.
"Give us something to ease us out of what we've been through," Hunter suggested.
"Yeah."
Hunter sighed and looked back into the sky. Already, the vessels were no longer visible, just their trails through the clouds told that they had been there.
"I better get back to work," the man said, turning and rotating his shoulders in anticipation of the job ahead. "You've got thinking to do." He grinned at Hunter briefly, then hurried off before the officer could lob back an insult in exchange.
"Smart alec," Hunter muttered.
The sound of transporters alerted him that more of the Talon team were arriving. Medical was going to take care of setting up the infirmary, science would continue mapping the regional biology, though earlier expeditions had already determined that there were no immediately lethal plants or animals in the vicinity. Security would be helping out where they could, adding their muscle to the existing crew when needed. Engineering and Ops were there to ensure that nothing exploded. At least, that was what Hunter was hoping. It was a cake walk job.
Hunter glanced over his shoulder in the direction the worker had gone. Maybe the guy was right. Maybe the Talon was specifically called just to help them de-stress. Something about that just didn't sit right with the science officer, though.
As the Talon crew materialized before him, he pasted a smile on his face. Who had appointed him as official greeter anyway?
