He had been working hard, and sweat covered his body. The big man was just one of Starfleet's construction team who had been left behind to finish the job that had been started. His ship had left and he was more than a little apprehensive about the future. It wasn't his wish to be one of the colonists, so hopefully the Talon would give him a ride back to SGE and he could hitch a ride through the wormhole. Now, though, he was concentrating on the job at hand. His huge, deep brown muscles rippled with the force of his work as he set a beam into place. "Now," he said. He held it there while another worker melted the metal cross support connection. When that was set, he stood fully, cracked his back and rubbed his hands together. "What's next?"
He and several others looked over the plans on a PADD that rested atop a water dispenser. "One more hole," he said. There were groans all around and he laughed. "One more. That's all." The ground of Celda contained some clay, which made digging difficult, but not impossible. "Give me the shovel, I'll do it." The digging implement was gladly thrust into his meaty hand and he got to work. Little gnats annoyed him and he stopped to wave them away.
"Kale, are you done yet?"
He laughed, deep and resonant. "Almost. Stupid bugs are back." The insects had driven the crew almost insane for days. Drawn by the sweat of the workers, all they wanted was a little sip. With a mighty thrust of the shovel with his foot, he tried to hurry through the rest of the dig.
Thunk.
"What th-" Kale pulled the shovel out of the hole. "I hit something." Kneeling down, he began pulling soil aside with his hand. There was something there. His fingers wrapped around something. "It's a root," he said.
"There aren't any trees around," one of the other workers observed.
"Maybe it's an old one," Kale volunteered. "Lemme see if I can pull it out. It feels like I might." With a strong tug, he managed to see it somewhat. "It's broken at the end," he said as he was able to see the jagged edge of the object. Definitely an old root."
"Get it out. Break's in ten minutes."
He tugged again, expecting it to be attached on the other end, but it came free easily and he fell backwards onto his butt. Held in the air by his large hand was a long bone.
"I don't remember any animals that size."
"Maybe it's a dinosaur."
That sent them all into laughter.
"Hide it. If the guys in blue get word of this, we'll be here for days."
Kale looked at it and wiped the dirt away. "Let's see what it is, first."
More groans.

A short break and about an hour later, a skull was laid on the crumbled dirt from the hole. "Damn." Reluctantly, he made the call.
"Crewman Kale to Medical Team. We need you down by the habitat construction site." He looked at the bones. "No hurry, though." The thing wasn't going anywhere. Sitting down next to the pile of bones, he began sorting them. Bones that looked like spine went into one pile, ribs into another. The little tiny bones, he had no idea where they went, so they all got lumped together. When he was done, he stared at the skull. It looked human but the bony projections under the eye sockets told a different story.
