The smell hit Etaera before she had even completely rematerialized on the planet's surface. It was worse than the smell on some planets she had been to that lacked modern waste disposal systems, and still had sewers. The Ohrna itself was no longer the luminous gold that it normally was, but instead was a thick, tarry brown-black. Etaera looked over at Greg, her expression conveying the concern that she felt. They had to act quickly. She doubted that the Ohrna could survive for long.
She swatted at some pesky insects that were flying around, and debate whether the crew should be wearing some sort of special protective gear to save them from e smells and the bugs. The few Etimonians who were tasked with the care of the Ohrna stood around, their faces sullen. Etaera admired their ability to maintain a straight face given the conditions. All she could think about was the fastest way to not have to smell the horrific stench anymore.
What would Khetah have done? She wondered, but she knew that he had always been the type to delegate, and if he was in her position he would have tasked his first officer with the mission. Perhaps I should give more credence to his leadership style. Still, it was difficult for her as a woman who wished to carve her own destiny to just blindly do what the previous Lin hosts would have done.
"You may not wish to let the Ohrna touch you, Captain." One of the young medics - an unjointed Trill. - said. "We are uncertain what effects that it may have on a joined a Trill when it's healthy, I can't imagine the potential consequences with the Ohrna being so ill."
Etaera nodded. She knew that there were those who theorized that the Trill symbionts could telepathically communicate with the Ohrna much the same way as they communicated with the telepathic guardians at the spawning pools. Others feared that the Ohrna could force the Symbiont to be rejected. Either way, Etaera didn't intend upon chancing it. "Trust me, ensign, I have no intention of tempting fate."
