Sweat had already soaked her hair before she found the appropriate place in the forest and she settled her body gingerly down onto the mossy surface. Her boots and lower half of her uniform lay in a disorganized pile off to the side. Placing her back against a fallen tree, she took several deep breaths as another wave of pain caused her nails to dig into the tough bark. She knew her time was coming, it was why she had demanded to be part of the away team. There was no way she was going to give birth in Sickbay, or in the medical facilities on the planet, and have those pitying faces looking down at her, all of them knowing that the father was missing. That would be worse than facing this alone. She did not need pity.
Relief hit her as the pain and spasms subsided for a bit, but it was soon gripping her once again. She had done this before and was no novice when it came to what to expect. Then, though, she had given birth on the Sullivan, surrounded by strangers who urged her through it.
A cry of anguish escaped suddenly and she quickly placed a hand over her mouth as she tilted her head back. She was far enough away that she would not be heard from the forest, but she couldn't take any chances. Patrols were moving the border constantly.
"Breathe," she reminded herself. Her eyes closed and she imagined Dorian there with her, his hand clutching hers. But he was a ghost now, always in her thoughts. He would understand her need to do this alone.
There was a sound to the left, a crunching of dead leaves, and she held her breath.
