Liz stared down into the hole of nothing, part of her struggling to find some kind of explanation, the other bit just flat confused. It was...well, odd, and she had the absurd desire to reach down and touch it, just to see what would happen. Scientific discovery, and all that, and besides, it looked like it would be quite nice...
Her hand was slipping down the hilt of her qis, straying ever closer to the blankness when a voice broke whatever spell had held her. "That's interesting."
She snatched her hand away, the qis with it, and glanced up at the Captain as Robin came over to join her, stooping down next to the hole. "Yes," she said abruptly, her voice sounding loud in her ears...and everywhere else. Everything was silent, a blank of sound to go with the blank of sight that ran underneath them...she repressed a shudder that tried to make its way down her spine. It wouldn't help.
"It could be indicative of some technological failure," she said, "some sort of filter or projector that's not quite working." She glanced to the side as the Captain headed off again to wrangle another member of their party, just in time to see Robin's eyes wide, staring into the hole that she'd made as if hypnotized. "Robin," she snapped, putting a hand out before him.
Thankfully, he snapped out of it, and he rose to his feet. She followed him, giving one last glance down at the hole. There was something odd here, something that just eluded her, dancing ahead of her with its arms waving, shouting for attention. Now if it would just get loud enough for her to hear it.
"Star and Sur'Shess will follow the wind. Hopefully there will be water there. Take your weapon."
"I'd planned on it," Liz said under her breath, turning to face the direction they would be heading. The wind could barely be felt, just the merest tickle against her forehead, and she wasn't entirely sure how they were supposed to follow it. Hunters instincts. Yeah, right.
She bent down as Robin headed back to the group for a moment, slipping her boot off just enough to worm the sheath to her qis out. She sheathed her knife, and jammed it, sheath and all, into her belt, adjusting it so it sat better. It would have to work, though she did long for the heftier weight of her mek'leth at her back...or, better yet still, a bat'leth. Because while her snappish words in Robin's direction had been correct--its usage, in her life at least, was largely ceremonial--it was still far more comforting to have something that could actually do a significant amount of damage to any enemy that might present itself. A set of qis--or, in her case, one of the small knives--might be useful. But never as useful as a bat'leth and someone who knew how to use it.
"Ready? Every 200 metres I'm going to stab into the ground, it'll give us an idea on distance and so we won't get lost on the way back."
"Sounds like a good idea," Liz said, looking once more towards their destination. "It doesn't look like there's lots of landmarks in this place, so might as well make a few." With that, the two headed off, though the voices of the others didn't fade with much distance.
"Just when I thought this day couldn't get any worse."
"Had a bad day, then?" Liz asked, pausing alongside him as he stabbed the shard of PADD he held into the ground, jimmying it about so it made another little patch of nothing in the ground, a mound of grayish dust beside it. For a moment, he became still, and she thought she might have to make him snap out of it again. "Don't stare at it too long," she said, as off-handedly as she was able, "I'm thinking that might make this day a hell of a lot worse."
