That damned Q. Stetson just really couldn't get a handle on the guy. His experiences with Q's in the past had universally been terrible, yet this one seemed to be different - or, at, least, trying to be, but with a Q, you could never discern sincerity. Stetson thought, 'Maybe I'll see . . . ."
Darkness.
Then that semi-waking, semi-sleeping state where you weren't sure exactly what was going on.
Slow realization.
Something's different. Something's wrong.
The training that had been his life from his youth kicked in. He was awake, but no movement betrayed the change. He listened, but the sounds gave him no clue. The smells were different - not unpleasant, but nothing to be afraid of either. Through lidded eyes, he tried to look around as best he could while lying on his side. No movement. In fact, nothing much at all. Slowly he allowed himself to become more aware of his environment and take stock of the situation. He could perceive no threats, but that didn't meant they weren't out there. He reached for his phaser but found it non-functional. 'Wonderful, just wonderful,' he mused. Back to his training. 'Your mind is your best weapon.' That plus what was in the Away kit he always wore. So be it.
Hunter and Georgia lay next to each other, with Grace, Miriana, and Luis a little more spread out. Rhythmic breathing came from them all and there were no outward signs of trauma. The last thing Stetson could remember was that they had all been around the water reclamation area; now they were all here, wherever "here" was. At least they all looked okay; at least, as far as he could tell - they were all still wearing their EVA suits. He wondered if that was the reason they were still alive or if they were even needed. Georgia's tricorder was slung across her chest. Taking it, he tried to test the air, but THAT didn't work either. "Oh joy," he said to no one. "What else isn't working?"
"Stetson to Talon"
Nothing
"Stetson to shuttle"
Silence
No tech.
He'd never asked anyone to do something he wasn't prepared to do himself, and he sure as Hell wasn't going to start now. "Here goes nothing." Holding his breath and removing his EVA helmet, Stetson looked around, one last look, just in case he'd really screwed the pooch. He didn't really want to die a second time! Shutting his eyes tight, his pulse pounding, he let out a breath and took another one in.
Phew. Well, he could breathe, but it left his mouth tasting like the Cardassian army had just stomped through it and the last out had farted. But he was still breathing, so he chalked one up in the 'WIN' column.
Time to wake everyone up, put their collective minds together and come up with something - anything.
