She woke up, and she couldn't stop screaming. Only when her throat was sore did she stop, but the tears continued to roll down her reddened cheeks. Her hair flew behind her as she ran through the halls. Faster and faster she ran until she couldn't breathe. Leaning against a bulkhead, she struggled to catch her breath and give the stitch in her side time to settle down, but it was only for a moment, and she was on the run again. She knew all the alcoves, access ports and shortcuts on the Talon; she had been with the great lady since drydock. Hudson used her knowledge to her advantage and soon she found her destination, tucked up under the protective belly of its mother.
Kestrel. No matter the name, the Captain's yacht had been Hudson's hideaway. Not just on Talon, but on ships before, she had used the yacht as her sanctuary. One day, it would bite her, but she had clearance to maintain its cleanliness, so no one could fault her for being there. Refuse and debris were the last things on her mind now, though. Now, she tried to shake the feel of his strong fingers around her neck and the look in his eyes as he snuffed the lifeforce out of her. Long ago, she had found him frightening and it had almost cost them their relationship. It had taken time for her to see past his steely exterior to know the gentleness that rested in his heart.
All that was forgotten as she entered the Kestrel. She just needed to hide. It was a complete flight instinct, as primal as time itself. Curling into a ball on a bench, she hugged her legs, trembling in utter fear.
