"Really? The freedom to play without borders?"
Without borders? Bruce had been surrounded by them. He didn't say anything, wanting to remain quiet on the subject but Zaynah continued, relating to her own childhood. He could feel that pulse of anger erupting from within, he wanted to retort, to say 'oh yeah?' but he clamped his mouth tight and willed away his desire to vent. He looked back over his shoulder to the children, remembering their innocence and their smiles. He forced his own though it soon became genuine as he talked about doing something fun, racing and thinking of a painted Ferengi before dashing towards the entrance.
"You win,"
He grinned at Zaynah, his chest out, full of pride from the small stroke of his ego. Then he noticed the Orion waving to someone and he looked around to see two Pelebians approaching to talk about 'fun'.
"For fun of the flesh, you can try the blue building,"
Immediately, Bruce started looking around for a blue building. Where is it?! He half listened to the other answers until he was addressed directly.
"What are your interests? What do you do for fun on your ship?"
"Uh," Bruce glanced at Zaynah, no doubt she would be disappointed if he mentioned the blue building which meant it was also a no-go to the blue building, sadly. What did they mean by the saiit? Maybe waterfalls? Swimming? He imagined the woman in a bikini and was tempted to go with that answer. Besides, Zay's saiit would be 'wonderful', surely she would be curious to see that? As he considered the question further, he thought about his other more mundane interests.
"I like crafting things, woods mostly," Bruce shared, a perfectly innocent hobby. "I like tinkering with electronics too." He added, he was an engineer after all.
"Hm, crafting." Said one of the Pelebians thoughtfully, "It is a skill perhaps lost to some species with what is it? Replicanting technology?"
"Replication." Bruce corrected with a nod.
The other Pelebian shook his head.
"To create something is to put your tekia in it, it is different to all others like it. Like me and my friend, different but similar. We are all special." The two aliens smiled, as if in full agreement of the statement.
"What you make is your own."
Bruce smiled and suddenly wished he had a portfolio of some of his creations with him to show off, these guys seemed to be the type to really appreciate that sort of thing.
"Did you say wood?" One of the aliens said, suddenly skeptical.
"Uh, yeah."
"I do hope it was old wood, yes?" The Pelebian asked with a deep frown.
"Sure," Bruce said slowly, taken back by the sudden shift in attitude.
Then the smile was back on their faces, "Excellent! Now let me think, crafts crafts.."
The other Pelebian looked at Zaynah, "I apologise, we did not mean to forget you. What are your interests? What do you love?" He asked.
