(Note: This is in the Nursery, not Sickbay proper)
“You have to come,” the female voice hissed.
“I don’t know…” came the voice of a man, who sounded hesitant, “we’re going to get in trouble.”
“It’s fine…” the female began to protest.
“But the soldiers…”
“The soldiers will be at a disadvantage,” she said, “the lights keep going out. You know the station better than they do.”
“I suppose…”
“Your concern is not over the soldiers,” she said sagely.
“It is, but it isn’t,” he confessed. He sighed heavily before continuing. “We could get in a lot of trouble.”
“We will not.”
“The children were already abducted once. They are the rightful heirs to Etimon. They will be well-guarded.”
“You do not think it is worth the potential for trouble?”
“Oh, I do,” he said, “but I have no right…”
“You have every right,” she countered, her voice soft. “You did not ask for this to occur, but it did. You’re more important now than you’ve ever been before. You should not remain hidden from the people of Etimon.”
“But… what about Ahska?”
“Oh, don’t you worry, I’ll take care of her.”
“Ok then. Let’s do this,” he said, with new conviction creeping into his voice.
“Do you have your boots?”
“Yes,” he said, pulling two pairs out of the storage compartment. Both bespotted individuals pulled on their boots, and began to make their way to the nursery.
“They will stop us,” she said, as they drew near their destination. “I will talk to the guards, they will listen to me.”
“I hope you’re right.”
They were lucky in their travels, as the lights stayed on the whole way, and the gravity was only slightly inconsistent. The guards stationed outside the nursery were floating slightly, and seemed vexed by this fact.
“Who is he?” The first guard demanded.
“He is a pediatrician,” the woman lied. The man felt his heart thump harder in his chest. Would they believe him? Did he look like a pediatrician? He truthfully knew little about babies. Hopefully he’d not be asked to change a diaper.
“He is not on the list of individuals allowed to see the children,” the guard said.
“I vouch for him. The station is in a bad state, many doctors are tending to the injured,” she lied once more.
“Send a message to Ahska,” one guard ordered another. The transmission did not go through.
“I am a trusted advisor, I have gained her permission.” Another lie. She’d taken advantage of the fact that she knew Ahska was at present unreachable.
“If you insist, Sarnah,” the guard said, checking the chronometer. It was time for the children to be checked.
“Thank you,” Sarnah responded, ushering her male companion into the nursery.
He felt his skin grow slick with sweat as he entered the room. Hopefully the guards wouldn’t notice, as it was a bit cool and he had no proper justification for perspiration. He walked forward, slower than he would have liked now that he saw his goal in sight. He approached one of the children, and his mouth grew dry. He could hear the pumping of blood in his ears. Sarnah punched a security code into a terminal, which dropped the force field, and the man reached in, picking up one of the babies gently.
He was going to get in so much trouble… but he didn’t care.
Closed, for now
