“I can give you three quarter impulse in about eight minutes. That's as good as we're going to get.”
Good, he thought. They were back in business. Three quarter impulse wasn't much in the grand scheme of things, but when the alternative was scooting along on thrusters, three quarter impulse was everything. Getting impulse back online would also make the bridge happy, and hopefully get them off his back long enough so his team could put the ship back together again.
"Eight minutes, huh? If I didn't know better, I'd say you were trying to make a run for my 'miracle worker' title," he teased, feeling rather proud of himself for talking to Eilidh like she was a normal member of the crew. Baby steps, Cobus.
He pulled up the diagnostics for the impulse reactors. "Reactor three has a malfunction in the cooling system. I think we can still get it back online, but we'll need to keep the deuterium flow down around 20% or it's just going to trip the safety again," he said, tapping away at his console as he brought up the repair team manifest.
He reissued new repair assignments to teams that were finishing up with their previous ones, and checked to see who they had down in the core to make repairs on the reactors, and who else he could send to help them. The team on the shield grid reported in as "making good progress". Ventral shielding had been restored and they were moving on to start filling in the rest of the gaps.
Convinced that nothing was going to blow up in his brief absence, Cobus made his way to the nearest first aid kit and borrowed its dermal regenerator. He grimaced as he unwound the makeshift bandage from his hand, watching as the oozing bits of second degrees burns clung to the fabric. Pointing the dermal regenerator as his hand, he made his way back to his station, absently waving the regenerator's probe in a haphazard fashion that would have made a medic cry.
