"You know you need to tell me." The Counselor could sense hesitation from both of the individuals who were seated across from him in his office. In prior sessions, they had already discussed how the two officers had ended up far away from SGE, in a ship borrowed from the Governor himself, with two fugitives. They had gone through the discovery of Colton Hunter, the deception that ultimately ended with one of the Federation's most wanted men on the bridge of the Phoenix, but that was as far as the counselor had dared push them...until today.
Hunter glanced silently at Emmarie and then back down at his hands. Colton had pushed his buttons and touched the very core of his being with his words. It was difficult to explain what happened next, especially to someone who had not been there for any part of it.
"I..." He took a breath and again looked at the mother of his child. This time, his eyes found the floor shortly thereafter instead of his hands. It was easier to look at something inanimate. "I asked him where our son was. He said...he asked-" Hunter's hands balled into fists and his face flooded with hatred. He stood suddenly, his hands scrubbing his face rapidly. "Emm, I can't do this."
"You're in a safe place," the Counselor encouraged him in a calm manner. "You need to get this out in the open."
"He called her a whore, he questioned my son's parentage." Hunter moved rapidly toward the Counselor, standing directly in front of him.
"You've told me that," the man said to Hunter, nonplussed by his display. "There was something more. What did he ask?"
Hunter paced, his mind racing. Since they had returned to SGE, he had lost the ability to compartmentalize what had happened and go on with his life, something that had never occurred before.
"Lieutenant?" The Counselor could see him getting more wound up by the minute. He had to let it go.
Glaring at the Counselor, Hunter stopped his pacing and stood next to where Emmarie sat. His hand reached down and gripped her shoulder tightly. "To which part of him, exactly, are you referring," he said bitterly.
"Excuse me?"
"That was his reply to me asking for the whereabouts of our child. "To which part of him, exactly, are you referring"!" Hunter's voice had risen to a fever pitch.
"What...what did you do?" The Counselor was beginning to get a tad unnerved. Everything he had heard about Colton Hunter was true. The man was a monster.
"I lost it," Hunter shouted. "Don't even tell me you don't understand that!!"
"What did you do," the man repeated calmly.
"He was my brother," Hunter said. "I..." Indecision clouded his eyes, followed by tears and he sank down to the floor, burying his head in Emmarie's lap. "All my bravado...all my hatred...and I just..."
A huge, ragged breath racked his lungs and he gripped the Orion.
"I couldn't do it."
