Her red hair was still wet as she hit replay on the audio message she had from her brother. It was nice to hear hear his voice again. It was a little but of home that in one way made her feel terrible...she couldn't remember the last time she was at home, the last time she had seen her brothers or seen her parents. Charlie was explaining that his band had just finished touring, they had some new material and he'd attached the album as audio messages. That Jay was doing good, that he was in Paris still and was working on some big project for some building thing and that truth be told no one really understood what he did. He just did it but that was her brothers despite being identical twins they were very different from each other. The only commonality they had was they both marched to their own drum. She laughed about it to herself as she fixed her hair and made it look dry and somewhat presentable.
He explained that mum and dad were fine, mum had being going out of her mind because every time she heard about a skirmish out at space she automatically assumed it was Eilidhs ship that was involved and Starfleet were getting sick of fielding her calls demanding to know where her daughter was. Their dad was busy doing...whatever it was he did...fixing things in the distillery and wanted to know when she was going home. While they were in dock Eilidh made plans to send each of them a long message.
Of course he had told them about her and Cobus, they didn't know about the fact they had split up because well...she hadn't spoke to them in that long but they were also demanding that she brings him home next time they were on the planet and Eilidh couldn't help but smile. Oh she could just imagine her father chasing him around the outhouses with a baseball bat threatening to kill him if he ever hurt her. Part of her found that ironic really given the recent events.
As she walked around her quarters, civies on because she didn't plan on hanging out in her wrecked uniform all afternoon she had his songs playing, part of her hated him and adored him, her brother had an insane level of talent. Is it okay to be afraid of love if you don't understand it? Was it? Because Eilidh knew point blank that was what she was scared of, she didn't get it, she didn't understand how she could feel so strongly for someone...and it terrified her.
He hit the nail on the head, The nights are so long without you and the days speed up, My god I'll never let go of you now because somethings are not worth changing. He wasn't worth loosing him, what they had she didn't want to change, they were magnificent together and she knew it...and she wasn't going to let it fall between her fingers again. Their captain was dead. Their ship was in ruins...and with death on their front door knocking she had realised that she was only ever going to regret the things she didn't do.
They send people into space without ever really knowing if they are ever going to come back down. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, she got a shiver, they might not make it home. Her brother realised that more than she did. They were sent to the far reaches of the galaxy with no idea if they were going to make it home, and if the rest of her life was going to be this ship then she was going to spend it with someone who made her feel like she could do anything. Like she was the center of the universe, he was the one and she knew it. When he was around she felt the weight of the world fall of her shoulders. How many people could do that?
So she waited, fidgeted, she'd wiped the table five times in the last hour because
there was no way to stop the butterflies, to get rid of the tremble in her fingers. How did you explain to someone that they were your spark, they were what kept you going, made you want to be better? That the salt the world had rubbed into her wounds didn't hurt so much anymore? That it wasn't because she didn't feel the pain it...that it was because she wasn't scared of it anymore.
She wasn't scared any more because he was there, it was more than love and she didn't have a word for it, English didn't have a word for it...but her native language did: gràdh gun chealg. Beyond love. It was a hard concept to explain but...something being difficult had never stopped her before.
