"Shhh," the woman at the controls urged. "We're almost there." The small ship approached Starbase Gamma Etimon and Boribeth's heartrate increased with every second. The past month had been a disaster, full of intrigue and deals and selling her soul to retrieve the cargo behind her. Every other step she took caused her to change her mind, to go back into relative obscurity, to hide for the rest of her life. Still, she knew she couldn't change this path. She had the power, skills, and influence to do what others could not. She was outside of the law and knew how to use it to her advantage. However, this was not to end well for her.
"Personal vessel Absinthe requesting docking for the unloading of cargo," she said after receiving the query from SGE's Flight Control. She took in a deep breath, then continued. "Submitting verification now."
"Vessel Absinthe you are authorized to hold your position for further instructions."
They knew.
"Understood, Flight Control," she replied.
Voice recognition would have set off a plethora of alarms and the proper authorities notified. She waited, sweat forming on her forehead, ignoring the console in front of her that was squawking as SGE scanned the ship.
"Sending docking instructions now. Once docked, please power down and exit your vessel."
She swallowed. "Thank you, Flight Control."
Carefully, she piloted the ship into the bay and did as instructed. She brought no belongings, no mementos, nothing that needed to go with her. All she took was the cargo, held in both of her arms. She didn't look back, but walked with purpose down the ramp. Already there, were the requisite security guards. "I will release my cargo to only one person," she said. Her hand pulled the blanket away from the green-tinted, incredibly small and fragile baby in her arms. "Lieutenant Emmarie."
