It had been a busy shift, and Leria hoped she would be able to remember everything that had happened when she needed to do her reports later. I wasn’t even supposed to be here today, she thought ruefully. But with the CMO not-yet-arrived, Quirrel indisposed, and several of SGE’s doctors off the station for various reasons, it had all fallen to her. Oh well, at least there were no irate security officers pregnant with magical babies this time. It was best when all of her patients were within Leria’s areas of expertise.
For the moment, all of her patients were stable, and she snuck into the CMO’s office to have a bit of coffee, and to get her log straightened out.
“Physician’s Log, supplemental,” she began, spreading all of the padds with various records in front of her. “@desan relieved @raal from duty, pending medical examination, as he believed the Captain’s behavior to be irrational and potentially damaging to the station as a whole, and to the Federations diplomatic efforts in the gamma quadrant. Upon examination, Captain Raal was found to be suffering from elevated levels of stress hormones, and lacerations resulting from striking an object with his fist. Further investigation resulted in the recovery of a small androgen stimulator, which had been concealed within one of Raal’s pips. As the device was of unfamiliar construction, it was handed over to Starfleet Security. Captain Raal was informed of the device, and Starfleet Security is investigating who may have put the device in place. Captain Raal was kept in the medical bay for rest and observation, but was allowed to leave once his hormone levels had returned to normal parameters. As it is extremely unlikely that Captain Raal has any involvement with the device being placed on his person, he can return to duty once he feels up to it, though he is advised not to overexert himself for the next few days.” Leria still hadn’t heard back on whether the security team had identified the individual who’d placed the device on Raal’s uniform, but that wasn’t really her concern, outside of rabid curiosity.
“In the middle of investigating Captain Raal’s behavior, @pat, @jonathanrichards, and @matthew were transported directly to the medical bay. Each had been struck with disruptor bolts while investigating a Romulan vessel on Etimon’s surface. Additional mild dehydration was identified. Doctor Quirrel was tended first with a standard course of dermaline gel and neodextramine solution. A stimulant was provided to Quirrel to glean additional information regarding the well-being of the two other members of the away team. Commander Richards and Lieutenant Howe were treated in similar fashion, but were allowed to awaken on their own time.”
“While treating Lieutenant Howe, an unidentified Orion male, and @hunter were transported to a secured area of the medical bay. The Orion male was victim of a phaser strike, and was treated for mild burns. He was returned to the brig to awaken of his own accord. Hunter showed signs of second-hand phaser stun, and was also allowed to awaken on his own. @emmarie was involved in the scuffle leading to the phaser discharge, and had several contusions, but declined care.”
She took a deep breath, trying to remember the remainder of the patients she’d seen, as it had all blended together. “There was an unrelated scuffle in an unapproved gambling facility aboard the station. Several individuals were brought to the medical bay by security personnel. One, @quin, was transported directly to the medical bay with suspected sinus tachycardia, and was ultimately found to be experiencing vegetovascular crisis as a result of stimulant overdose. He was treated with lectrazine, and remains in the medical bay in observation. His emergency medical contact, @ahska, was notified. Additionally, as his overdose was found to be self inflicted, the Chief Science Officer, and Acting Captain Kayden Desan were notified. Security is investigating to determine who gave him the stimulants, which appear to have been stolen from the station’s medical stores. It is my recommendation as attending physician that Lieutenant Quin be removed from duty pending successful completion of a substance abuse program.”
She paused, scrubbing her face with her hands for a moment, before continuing. A stimulant stronger than the coffee in her mug was a tempting proposition at the moment, but she knew all-too-well the risks. Let’s see, evaluated, Quin, gave him lectrazine, then what? I remember yelling at someone. Ah! Security. They beamed over the idiot who OD’d but not the guy with a head injury. “A member of the station’s civilian staff, @sterling, was brought in by security as a result of the gambling operation that was interrupted. He suffered blunt force trauma to the skull, inflicted by an enormous bodyguard. The triage nurse noticed subdural hematoma, and notified me. As Lieutenant Quin was stabilizing from the lectrazine, I left him in the care of the nurse, and performed neurosurgical repair of the cerebral cortex. During the procedure, evidence of Accelerated critical neural pathway formation was identified, though as the patient is not a Starfleet officer, no action was taken.”
“An aggressively vocal Ferengi was brought down with Bishop, and became irate when the triage nurse informed him that he was considered stable, and would need to wait for a free doctor as a result. The Ferengi, Bok, was suffering from neck contusions resulting from Bishop’s attempt to strangle him. All damage was superficial, and some of what appeared to be contusions were actually smudges of Ferengi beetle snuff. The security team continues to investigate the unapproved gambling facility, the use of gambling equipment that had been tampered with, and the resulting physical confrontation.”
“Finally, @iana was brought here as well, clad in a blanket and a rather shiny thong. The security guard accompanying her expressed his opinion that her injuries were rather critical. Given that she was standing, and showed no signs of extreme duress, I allowed the triage nurse to look her over. Iana had a lilac contusion on her left breast, that was in the shape of a large hand, presumably male. There was no damage to the mammary glands, so an analgesic was administered, and the contusions were repaired with a dermal regenerator.” She paused the log for a moment, shaking her head. “Clearly I miss out on all the best parties, and I am the only woman aboard the station who believed in wearing clothes.”
She took a deep gulp of her coffee, which was now rather cold. “A large security contingent was sent down to the planet by Commander Kayden to retrieve the remainder of the away team. @zaynah was beamed up first, and was tended by a nurse as her injuries were similar to that of the other three away team members. Commander Victor Roman was transported shortly thereafter, along with missing USS Talon first office @lavaura.” She frowned, looking through the window to where the Commander still lay in one of the biobeds. “Vrel was suffering from a large assortment of injuries, some from the crash landing of the Romulan vessel a month ago, some from torture over the course of the past few weeks, and some from the recent removal of her tongue using a engineer’s laser cutting tool. In addition, she was in an advanced state of dehydration and malnutrition. All told, her injuries included the aforementioned tongue, a poorly healed pelvic fracture, several broken and bruised ribs, superficial burns to her feet, thighs, and buttocks, pressure ulcers, genital trauma including bruising and swelling of the posterior fourchette and abrasions to the vagina, and dermatitis on the buttocks and inner thigh from soiled garments.”
She sighed, shaking her head. “Upon realizing that the patient had been the victim of sexual assault, it was found that Vrel is in the early stages of pregnancy. DNA testing will be completed to identify the father. At present, no action is being taken regarding whether the pregnancy will continue, as the patient is under too much stress to be tasked with that decision at present.”
“Regardless, as none of the injuries were immediately life threatening, terakine was administered to relieve pain, and a neodextramine solution given to counter dehydration. The patient was put to sleep with anesthezine, as the sheer volume of injuries that needed to be tended to would cause tremendous pain and distress. The large majority of the superficial injuries were resolved with dermal regenerator, and a prophylactic antibiotic course to prevent infection. Fractured ribs and pelvis were repaired via osteoregeneration. Future pelvic reconstruction may be necessary in the future, but were deemed to not be critical at this time.”
Another chug of coffee, then, “The matter of repairing Commander Vrel’s tongue was a bit more difficult. Fortunately, there was still tongue tissue present, and said tissue was gradually regenerated, and a vascular structure was manually rebuilt. In the end, I believe all normal function should be regained, but as the patient has not yet awoken, taste and speech abilities have not been tested. Vrel will continue to be monitored by the medical team, but once she’s awoken, she should not need to remain here. Her return to duty is pending psychiatric investigation, but there are no physical conditions that would prevent her from continuing her Starfleet commission.”
“After completing surgery on Commander Vrel, I checked on Ensign Zaynah, who was recovering well. She may return to duty once she has gotten a bit more rest.” She terminated the log, then stood up, and stretched out. Hopefully things would return to normal soon, and she could go take a nice, well deserved rest.
