“Is this Deck One?”
"Yes," he lied. "Through here." He guided her around a corner, looked over his shoulder, and jammed the underside of his wrist into the exposed flesh of her neck. While Zaan had the ability to kill with his wrist implement, the guards were only allowed a compound that would stun. It was all part of Zaan's paranoia. As Alyssa's body immediately relaxed, the guard caught her and dragged her into a nearby room. Making sure the door was locked, he turned off the lights and sat in the darkness with her. Fear could do strange things to people, and the alien was resorting to the most basic of needs, safety. He wasn't thinking long-term, just far enough to ensure that his life, and that of his prisoner, would continue, at least for several more hours.

Alarms sounded as the ship was rocked by yet another blast from the powerful ship that had easily caught up with them. Initially, Captain Mitchell had tried negotiations, but after several hours, it became apparent that Zaan was less than willing to hear what Felix had to say. Targeting the non-essential areas of Zaan's ship, Mitchell was slowly incapacitating the vessel.
The alien sitting near Alyssa was balled up in fear, his whole body trembling as he watched her wake. The flashing lights of the alarms, cyan in color, illuminated the pair in a strobe-like manner. "I have failed you," the man murmured, rocking back and forth in place.

Kealan was left alone after the first volley from the Hyperion but he could do nothing about it. It was getting harder to breathe as fatigue set in and he fought to stay awake. He was certain that death would come quickly if he lost consciousness, and he struggled with each and every tiny breath.
