She double-checked her tool case which contained tools from the micro to a hyper-spanner. This allowed her to work on a multitude of items from biopaks and ISO-linear circuit boards to ODN optic cables which spanned from optics as fine as a person's hair to the size of a man's pinky. The larger splicing she left to engineering even though she knew how to perform that repair. Her time on the USS Solstice was spent as an Engineer primarily. She performed duties with Operations and Science very frequently. Her micro tools were for on the fly circuit repair in the event a bad spot was found in God only knew where. Will she need any of this? Maybe she would need it. Maybe she wouldn’t need it. Logic dictated that preparing for the worst possible scenario was usually the best course.
"Nivans to Commander Griffon," the excitement in her voice was palpable, "Bartlett has zeroed in on the possible origin of the messages. There's a very good chance the person who sent them did it from SGE. I'm sending over the data collected now. Would you like us to go check it out and shake some trees?"
Well at least Eden was giving her credit for the work. The word ‘us’ stopped her in her tracks. Her eyes widened as her thoughts raced. ‘Why did she say us? What does a tree have to do with anything?' The spirited sayings of the Ensign lost on the computer nerd. She held the Federation PADD against her chest like a security blanket.
//"Griffon to Nivans. Y'all go down there and shake the trees like a wet hound dog shakes his fur."//
Caroline halted in mid retreat as duty came before personal issues. If there was one virtue she had above all else it was loyalty. She sighed a moment as she listened to the Ensign. She paled a little bit as she was included with this fur-shaking thing. ‘Now there is a dog involved. What do a tree and a dog have to do with encryption and finding anyone?’ She did get the idea that the Commander pretty much sealed her doom to go with the Ensign. A resigned expression crossed her face as the decision for her to be included made sense as all sorts of thing could go wrong with running scripts. She could make adjustments on the fly. As if the Ensign heard her thoughts, it seemed her words echoed in concordance. She grasped her pad at her chest a little more
tightly.
"Hey Lieutenant, what do you say you do whatever magic it is you did here," Eden raised the infamous PADD up, "but over at SGE? Bet you're dyin' to do some more diggin' around."
Her eyebrow rose a little at the word Magic. Computers were governed by mathematical principles. The ciphers and encryptions were slaves to universal mathematical principles cleverly manipulated, looped, scrambled and randomized. Even letters in any language had a mathematical equivalent. All of this boiled down to ones and zeros. Caroline lived these concepts and principles. In a soft quiet tone, “Well we weren’t able to complete the trace. A job left undone does no one any good. Personally I prefer to finish a job.” She hoped this was a
succinct enough of an answer.
"I promise I'll stop cussin'," Eden gave her best, most charming smile, "and Lieutenant Alexander and Star deserve the best people on this."
Unfortunately Caroline was a tad immune to those charming smiles that lured her into doing this or that in the past. She did smile shyly and politely back. “I have heard worse. “ There it was. If a person was worth their weight in salt, they would not shirk on this noble cause. Caroline was not one to shirk anything. She moved to grab a case of iso chips and slid it in with Emilie, her custom PADD, which was in a side pouch at her hip. She had her tools, Emilie, the case of scripts in case she needed to do something different on the fly and herself. Her brow furrowed as she went through her mental list then nodded to no one in particular “Alright Ensign lets go find ourselves a saboteur.” Scandalizing a person’s reputation was sabotage
