”There's not going to be a lot of down time in the foreseeable future."
It was beginning to look like many of the rumors that Seras had heard were true; that Talon was a volatile place to be at the moment. That was a bad thing for some people, but after her trip back from the beta quadrant, she was positively itching for action, though one wouldn’t know if simply by looking at her.
”Please take a few moments after the meeting to introduce yourselves and make her welcome."
“Pleasure to be here,” Seras said, nodding at those around her. She quickly matched faces to the personnel records that she had been provided on the way over, and identified the individuals who would be fighting the good fight at her side.
”It could be an hour, a month, a year, maybe never."
She didn’t know who Lieutenant Star was. but she’d been given a rather comprehensive folder on Kinin Alexander. Wife of the former Talon Captain. Mother of his child. Suspected for involvement with the known Federation traitor, M’Khol, though they hadn’t ever found evidence to substantiate it. This might be the evidence we needed, she thought grimly, knowing what her eldest sibling would have said in regards to the situation.
"That all said, I have a responsibility to the Talon that outweighs the desire to wait."
What would Stetson do, Seras wondered, if Kinin was found to truly be consorting with the enemy? If her loyalties were to the Empire? If she’d left the Talon willingly? Sure, no one wanted to think that way, but it was a train of thought that could prove true.
Check for signs of a cloaked vessel, or a vessel that departed at the time of their disappearance, as well as any other unexpected sightings or transmissions, transporter or otherwise"
“Yessir,” she said. She didn’t expect to get much. Etimon’s natural energy fields were a considerable hindrance to any sort of searches for cloaked vessels. She also expected that the Romulan and Therys vessels that were known to be in the area would muddle any data she was capable of collecting.
More importantly, don't let Kinin and Robin down."
Seras nodded. Taking this as a dismissal, she walked out into the main security office, and hesitated. Though she had orders, she also needed to do at least some sort of greeting for those around her.
“Sorry that we won’t have time to ease you in. The Talon’s never one for the easy path anyway. You’ll get used to it after awhile.”
Seras shrugged, “Better than being bored,” she said, smiling at the other woman. It was good being ihn an environment where there were already a lot of women. Though it was the 25th century, there were still many species that didn’t respect women in a security force. Seras had found that diversity lead to strength.
“SGE has gone to double-red alert,”
“What?” Seras asked, heading over to where Haywood was working. Family is dangerous. It can distract you from duty. It can make you vulnerable, someone had once told her. It had been a criticism of the tendency of newer vessels to have crew families aboard, but it had resounded for her in particular in a different way.
“But they report that the situation is under control. They don't believe there is any ongoing danger to rest of the base.”
It would be easy to send Desan a message. Get the scoop. See what was going on. No. I am not using him to my advantage. She wanted to succeed on her own merits, and it wasn’t just that she didn’t want other thinking she used him to get ahead; no, she wanted to know deep down inside herself that she had succeeded on her own merits.
“That’s the cave where the Romulan’s held Commander Vrel,”
“Too many Talon crew have gone missing against their will,” Seras said, frowning. She knew one of the reasons she’d gotten the assignment aboard Talon was because she was experienced with Klingon and Romulan tactics. She didn’t like that fact. It said far more about the tenuous situation that was galactic relations than any security briefing ever could.
“I’m guessing there is a report on this somewhere?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Seras made a mental note to read that as soon as she could. Though it was highly unlikely the Romulans were involved in the most recent disappearance, it would be short-sighted to eliminate the possibility.
"What of Sean?"
“We should increase security around the nursery,” Seras said. She didn’t like the idea of a child becoming a pawn in a dangerous game. She went to work on her assigned task, knowing that the task was likely futile. Still, with no ral knowledge of those who were gone, she would be at a disadvantage in many of the other tasks, so she resolved to at least do this one to the best of her ability.
