More than once, Alyssa wondered whether Haywood was making up this whole Romulan incident, even as he described the report in detail. She knew him better than that, but the truth seemed so outlandish. The questions of how and why just staked higher and higher.
During their brief time serving togeter, Alyssa had barely known Commander Vrel, somewhat do to her own making. Vrel was Romulan, and as far as the Federation had come since the old days, there was still far more distrust than trust. But even Vrel did not deserve to be held like that, by those types of monsters. What had they done to her in all this time? And what had they gained in all that time? As much as she wanted to think through those possibilities, Alyssa knew it was neither the time nor place. She had to focus on the mission before them.
Her first stop was to get her combadge replaced. It was a quick and painless process, though amusing at some points. The look on the crewman's face when he asked her what happened to it was priceless. She suspected not many answered “I needed a bomb.” Haywood, at least, appreciated the response.
“I’ll explain later,” she offered him. She knew just by the look in his eyes that Haywood would take her up on that offer.
With that taken care of, all she needed was the proper gear, and they would be good to go. Only a minute down the corridor, a familiar face in pink came around the corner.
“Ensign,” Alyssa started as she perked up. Good. She had hoped another security officer would cross their path. She was about to continue when she noticed that Eden was unusually damp. More to the point, she didn’t look like she ought to be damp. Alyssa shook it off. Time was still of the essence.
“Lt. Alexander and Lt. Star are missing,” she stated point blank. “We’re trying to find clues to where they might have gone. Haywood and I are headed to the planet surface. I need someone to dig deeper into this…” She tried to find an appropriate word. Most of them were insults. “…message that was sent ship-wide. It’s too well timed for it not to be involved. If you need anything, Commander Griffon is in his office.”
“Get to it.” Alyssa moved on strangely confident in that decision. Eden had seemed to be an exception in Alyssa’s personal rulebook. Like Kayden and Bennett, she liked to keep the new people at arm’s length, but with Eden, Alyssa could find no fault. Even more, there was an instinct she had. She believed the woman to be one of honor, quirks or no quirks. It frightened Alyssa to throw her trust in someone’s hands so readily, but she almost didn’t have a choice. It just happened.
“And, Ensign,” she called out to Eden. “Thank you.”
With just alittle more lift in her step, Alyssa led on. Hang on, you two, she mentally projected to whichever corner of the universe Kinin and Robin had found themselves. We’re coming.
