Gram’s cabin was a bit away from San Francisco and undamaged by the war. The great redwoods in the distance beckoned her. The obscure orders was at once something of relief and worrisome. At least it didn’t end in another meeting with Starfleet intelligence. The computer technician had proven herself. That bolstered her confidence as she became ingrained in a tight close team. She had her fist on her face as her elbow rested on the table looking out at the looming redwoods about a kilometer from the cabin. She loved these woods. She was born not too far from the cabin and the woods were often a place of solace for her. Only this time Caroline’s tired mind drifted to one thing or rather one person.
Luis had entered her thoughts quite a bit on this imposed leave. Those deep dark eyes she kept seeing in about everything. Those deep dark brown eyes would hold Caroline in something that she could not push away or deny. Those eyes kept her light blues captured when they would meet up from time to time on the Talon. Those very eyes threatened to bring her deeper and deeper within where she could fall. That frightened the anxious girl. Caroline never had been there before. During the intervening months of one arduous mission after another and loosing crewmates those eyes became more and more important. Caroline found herself making room in her schedule for Luis. That highly regimented schedule where she had a mark for everything in her life. It was both exhilarating and daunting.
Of all of her fears, none of them came to pass. At first it would be days even a week or two till they met up at the mess hall or lounge. Then they started spending more time as Luis and Caroline did share holo programs. Caroline did have trust and confidence issues but Luis saw right through that. That too was disturbing. Caroline found his gentle patience become comforting and endearing. Now the ship has docked at Earth after all was said and done. They were home. Despite the losses this time, she didn’t feel lost. Not like it was with the Solstice. There was more than one occasion where she was in danger’s way. The Talon was there. That backbone she desperately needed was there. More importantly Luis was there. Somehow he made Sickbay visits not nearly as bad as her fears made them. She had changed with the tide of war. The Talon meant a lot to her and now Starfleet is going to change that. The thought of Luis possibly placed on some other duty elsewhere made a stone pit at the bottom of her stomach. Anything was possible with Starfleet.
She had provided the offer towards Doctor Luis Diego to come to the cabin. They could go on a hike to a couple of places that is important to her and to meet her Gram. Her Gram practically raised her with two parents performing duty for earth and Starfleet. Mom was a botanist and the girl’s father was a system analyst with Starfleet. Caroline’s parents were very busy. Her father was called to various locations fixing systems and bringing essential Infrastructure back online. The red head’s mother was placed to help restoration projects. It was just as well, the communication she had with them was enough and they said to enjoy her leave. She was supposed to relax but God knew how hard it is for that little nerdy technician to relax. Would he accept? Did she mistook his affections and the care she saw in his eyes? He did have his own large family to see, but still she worried if the offer was premature.
“Lina.. “ Her gram always called her that. the little old lady often said her Japanese tongue cant wrap around Caroline. “Lina. Come eat. What did they feed you out there? I swear if I ever get my hands on that cook on that ship you was on I would give that person a piece of my mind. Practically starving my grandchild.“ Make no mistake Gram would probably do just that.
She smiled “Gram. I ate, but it just gets busy. What did you make?” she asked as it is clear that those light blue eyes adored her Gram.
“Baked fish right from the lake that is stocked. Its brain food you know. And don’t tell me you just get busy. You still forget.” she said with a gentle waggle.
Caroline got up and walked over towards the wooden table. She grinned at what was an age old argument. Somehow the argument had its affectionate undertones. “You still fish Gram?” she asked.
“You bet. How do you think I keep going? Brain food!!” she said with a sharp nod of her head and a hand in the air as if her point was gospel. “I made you two. “
There were plenty of vegetables from the garden and fresh fruit sliced. Gram turned her on to whole foods early in the red head's life. On the table was Gram’s famous hot sauce. “Thanks Gram” she said as she hugged the old woman who happened to be shorter than she.
She sat down and just stared at her plate. Her Gram looked at her with an understanding eye. She didn’t say anything as her little Lina had been through a quite a bit. Genius though she might be, her granddaughter needed understanding and love. She patted Caroline’s shoulder only and went to put a tea kettle on before she sat down to the meal.
