Stepping off the ferry Eilidh stood on the pier, looking out at the island she called home. It was peaceful, even in the wake of a war that looked like the ravaged parts of the earth, this little island off the northwest coast of Scotland looked like the war and time itself had not touched it for centuries. Her beautiful Eilean Uibhist looked like another world in the shining sun. It was cold but the sun was out, green hills as far as the eye could see and blue waters and the weathered sign reading ‘Fàilte Eilean Uibhist.’ It had been a long time since she had been back on this little untouched corner of the universe and it felt like it as well, another world entirely from the scenes they had seen in space.
Smiling she reached out beside her, offered her hand to Cobus before giving a soft smile, it had been a while since she pulled that one out the bag, but the discomfort of war was hours at warp away and she was home. This was the one place in the universe that was going to be safe and she wanted to show him it. She wanted to share it with him. Maybe that said more about how she loved him than words would ever be. “My parents don’t live that far, just up the road it’s like ten minute walk.” And what a beautiful walk it was along the road from the pier, there was a few old houses…hundreds of years old facing the small bay ready to weather the worst of what the earth could throw at them. There were still telegraph polls carrying energy, not the same kind of electricity that was carried way back when but cleaner free energy all the same. To dig up the ground and put them under would have been a travesty to the landscape and they were yet to come up with better solution in this kinda setting.
As they walked up the uneven road, the slight incline and the feel of stones below her that she hadn’t felt in a long time she hoped her parents didn’t lose their cool too badly when they got there. Turning the corner at the sign ‘Eilean Uibhist Distillery’ and up the drive way the white house with the huge distillery attached on the end she spotted her father outside and he spotted them a mile off. There was a loud wave, a shout that Eilidh could make out to be ‘Helen, Helen! Get the kettle oan, EIlidh and her boy are here!’ She couldn’t help but laugh to herself.
They barely made it up the driveway before Eilidh was almost knocked off her feet by her father. It was an emotional moment as he hugged her before reaching out and dragging Cobus into the hug. “Aye it’s good to see you both, yer mam will be made up you’ve brought yer lad home, come on, both of you inside.” And with that they were almost shoved into the house through the front door. It was her mother that freaked out. Eilidh almost heard the shriek on the ferry as another set of arms came flying around them both. Her mothers babbling almost went straight over her head, something about how happy she was to see them, that they were saved mixed with tears and it took her a full ten minutes to calm her down as her father rolled his eyes at Cobus and simply told him, “she’s been going daft wi this war business, give the kids a moments peace Helen, their just aff the ferry for goodness sake, they probably had hee haw to eat or drink all day! Let them be it’s nae time for tears.”
As soon as she managed to break free of her mother Eilidhs eyes snapped to her boyfriend, who probably was terrified of her parents by now. “Alright, this is my mum Helen and that’s my dad Dougal.” Well. That was that relationship over, she was waiting for him to jump on the next ferry out of here. At least they had got the hardest part over with, she guessed meeting the parents was always a horrible moment anyway.
