Sitting in one of the two auxiliary control seats aboard the shuttle craft, Georgia reflected for a moment on how this wasn't what she thought she'd be doing today. Mind you, what she had expected to be doing involved paperwork and assessment of a planetary cataloging database, so she couldn't say she was exactly complaining about the change of plan.
She glanced over to her right, looking past the pilot Smith to where Adam across sat. Out of the corner of her eye she could just see the other shuttle, containing Bergin, Franks and Halsey, just before it disappeared from view. They'd each got a different list, and they each had to find their own set of objects. In a way, it was like that scavenger hunt game you played as children; two teams, each with a list of really weird stuff, that you found and won yourself some kind of prize if you got them all.
Of course, the stakes were a little higher here, but she hoped if she kept that kind of attitude then maybe it would make the whole thing a bit easier.
"So," she said in Adam's general direction, "how much information have you got about our targets?" Anything more than a name she could use to narrow down the search with the help of the shuttle's sensor array. "I've keyed up the basics for a sweep to start as soon as we're in range of the asteroids. Have you got an ETA on that yet?" Her last query was directed at the pilot. They'd left in such a hurry, no one had really had time to worry about something that wasn't really their responsibility. After all, what was the point of having a well qualified pilot on the team then trying to fly the shuttle yourself? Still, she suspected they couldn't be more than a few minutes away.
"I've also set up an analysis of the field," she continued. "The more we know about its composition, the easier we can navigate through it at less risk to ourselves." And she was all for less risk.
