The tension on the ship was thick and heavy. The red head tried to keep the optimistic bubble up but even that was waning thin. These Pewdin had everyone tied in knots. Caroline had spent the journey to the gamma quadrant getting to know the other officers in Operations or trying to. Tweaking routines had been the bulk of her job as ‘oiling’ the new programs and subroutines needed to be done. She had configured quite a number of brand spanking new PADDs, tricorders and com badges. New ship didn’t really have a broken computer core or database. It only needed data call adjustments and tweaks.
When Chief Sur’shess provided her the data packet to look over, the amount of data that she couldn’t read was overwhelming. In the silence of her office, she tried applying the universal translator. This was an obvious choice. The knack to effective troubleshooting is the power of the process of elimination. Her hopes dashed as the translator came up with nothing. It did however do one thing. There seemed to be five distinct unknown languages of an alien origin as the word alien flashed five times on her console. ‘Lovely’ she thought laconically.
She thought of Luis briefly and hoped he was doing ok as she let her mind worry for a moment or two before straightening herself. ‘Ok, Caroline time to get cooking.’ These languages were not a computer language she knew and she was acquainted to quite a few. A computer language most of the time broke down to ones and zeros or a patterned configuration to be able to render it for light and energy crystal modules. This needed linguistics and considering the source and it needed the point of view of another alien. She sent a message to Lieutenant Julie Harker and Ensign Zayna to please meet her in computer support in Operations.
She had to have a pattern to the language to perhaps get a consistent translation. Working a subroutine in after that would be able to be performed. From what she understands these are more instructions. She bit her lower lip as she waited for the other two ladies to reach her as she tried to glean anything, anything at all from those alien shapes and symbols that taunted and teased her intellect mercilessly. Unfortunately nothing was forthcoming from the stubborn symbols, like a miser with his gold it jealously kept its secrets and it would be their job to coax these miserly words to give up the ghost so they can translate the instructions.
