Only the smallest handful of memories flickered into Tegan’s mind in which her heart beat as rapidly as it did at this moment. She felt the pressure of a thousand eyes and for good reason. The fate of the entire crew rested almost literally in her hands. The tiniest slip or the briefest of oversights would mean catastrophe. But she was better than that. Her instincts were sharper and her skills deeper than anything these Pewdin could envision.
The Pewdin. What kind of people put hundreds of lives in jeopardy for a simple test? Who were they to call the Federation unworthy when they knowingly put whole families—young, innocent hands and hearts amongst them--at risk. She didn’t care if they passed these tests with flying colors, these were not people she would ever call friends.
Shaking off the frustration and anger, Tegan focused upon the first explosive. It was easier with Engineering evacuated all but for the few necessary personnel. Her and her escort, an Ensign Nivans whom had a duel charm and strength that Tegan could only admire. And then there Lt. Commander Sur'Shess and her escort. Ensign Stone she knew little about, but Liz Sur'Shess was another story entirely. Tegan still had moments where she had to process the concept of even a part-Klingon in any department save for Security. She saw them too much as warriors. Certainly they could destroy, but, in her mind's eye, they lacked the patience and delicacy it took to build and repair as Tegan did. But this woman had surpassed her most generous of expectations. Tegan had learned to respect her, and knowing that Liz was with her on this “test” gave Tegan ever the more confidence.
Though the temptation to remain ignorant prevailed in her heart, Tegan's eyes fell to the timer. Annoyingly, the Pewdin had designed the devices in their language, rather than Federation Standard. Normally, it was an understandable decision, but today is was simply an extra grain of salt in their proverbial wound.
Carefully, Tegan ran her tricorder over the timer, allowing the translation program to work its magic. The Pewdin symbols appeared on the small screen and reordered into standard numerals: forty-seven minutes and five seconds…
…four seconds…
…three seconds.
“I have forty-seven minutes on this one!” Tegan shouted to her higher-ranking partner. Tegan couldn’t help but send a smug smile up to Eden. Forty-seven minutes was a life-time compared to what she feared. The Pewdin clearly underestimated the abilities of a Starfleet engineer if they thought such length of time was challenging.
She quickly moved towards the next closest explosive, and ran another scan. Synchronized timing. “Same over here!”
Another wave of relief came over her. Once they unlocked the secrets of the first device, the rest would be a cake walk.
Tegan continued her sweep over the casing of the nearest device, hoping that her tricorder would cut as many corners as she needed to safely defuse the device. The results were less than uplifting. It revealed the unusual metal that casing itself was made from, but nothing more. Apparently, the Pewdin looked unfavorably upon cutting corners.
Damn them.
“I can’t scan underneath this casing!” Tegan shouted again. Her head whipped towards Liz. “Are you having any luck?”
