He had learned his lesson when he had sent that message on Earth. A message from the Captain, no matter what the wording, would be interpreted as an order by those of lower rank. While he appreciated the help with his sister's business, he still felt guilty that the others could have spent their time in other ways. Plus, Vanessa couldn't stop talking about "that hot pilot." So, this time, a generic message had been sent out, without his name at the top, simply indicating that some of the crew were getting together on the tiny planet of Umtor-hin, to try their hands at the Maze. It was located inside of a mountain and the entrance was reached only after a ten mile trek through the forest. Transporters were not recommended within a certain boundary around the mountain due to the high degree of spatial anomalies present. Each participant would pick up a beacon at the entrance that would allow rescuers to get to them should they fail or need emergency assistance.
The jungle was hot and steamy, causing Kealan's dark blue t-shirt to cling to his torso like a second skin, and his boots were caked in mud. Ten miles was a good workout in and of itself, but Kealan was anxious to see the maze. Supposedly, anomalies within kept changing the layout, sending you suddenly back to the beginning, or in a tunnel you had not yet visited. Deep in the center of the mountain lay the reward, a crystal clear pool of filtered water and a refreshing swim.
"Maybe three more miles," he asked after stopping and taking a huge swallow from the silver water flask that hung from his belt. The others of the crew had fallen behind him, letting him lead, something Kealan had hoped wouldn't happen. There were days where he just wanted to be a simple man, a friend, not the one in control. Squinting through the dappled sunshine, he looked toward the mountain. "I think I see the entrance."
