Taylor didn't know why it happened, but it did. The moment Zaynah's words stopped, so did Taylor's sense of time. She saw the light leave her friend's eyes as a hole filled the place where her organs should have been and then she began to fall. Training shook Taylor's legs to life, the sudden adrenaline seemingly flushing away any evidence of prior intoxication. She dived for the ground but she wasn't fast enough to prevent the back of Zaynah's head hitting the ground hard.
Bernard joined her on the ground and she looked at him as he called her name. She was gone. They both knew that, they had seen death too many times not to know. But that didn't stop Taylor from gently curling her fingers around a green hand, hoping to feel a pulse for someone who had previously so full of life and emotion.
The doctor stood and Taylor was going to do the same but stayed a second longer to squeeze Zaynah's hand and to gently close her eyes. She had always had big eyes, as if forever wide in awe of the universe and its scientific secrets. But that was all the sentiment that time could afford as the ship rocked with a mighty shake and before knew it, Taylor was up on her feet again.
What the hell had happened? Taylor looked around for any kind of threat but there was nothing. She needed a console, and hoped it had information she needed, she began running towards the entrance to the mess hall in hopes of reaching a console panel on the wall. But as soon as the doors began to part, a ball of flame spurted past the doorway and bounced off the dead-end of the corridor just past the door and exploded outwards to enter the doorway.
The force flung Taylor off her feet, sending her flying into a table. Despite the pain that zapped throughout her body, she still had the presence of mind to call for an emergency forcefield that buzzed into place within the doorway.
The flames that had entered quickly evaporated, and the fire behind dissipated soon thereafter. It took quite a hit to cause that, not one but two EPS conduits must have blown at the same time along that corridor. Taylor groaned aloud, shakily standing to her feet and prodding the back of her head to find nothing but wet hair. She was bleeding.
"Don't go that way," Taylor breathed, one of her legs still shaking.
