"Good teams can't protect everyone all the time. Tell that to Zaynah."
Yolanda generally prided herself on the portrayal of how thick her skin was. Though, she wasn't invulnerable, and those words had hurt... especially considering the source. She knew that there was no malice behind them... simply frustration. Though, Yolanda had been kicking herself for Zaynah's death for sometime. It had been her plan... her curiosity that had put the ship in jeopardy. And she had been away when everything had gone to hell and when Zaynah had....
"Not that you couldn't protect her, it's just-"
Yolanda raised her hand slightly and shook her head. The apology wasn't necessary. Logically, she knew that it wasn't her fault. There wasn't anything she could have done, and certainly no way she could have predicted what would have happened. Yet, all of that knowledge didn't make it hurt any less.
"Let's continue, shall we. Commander Sula has assured me that this alert is nothing he couldn't handle and that he'd let us know if the situation escalates. Please have a seat."
Yolanda leaned back in her seat and found herself quickly the target of Morgan's verbal barrage. Clearly, she didn't appreciate the Science Chief's earlier answers. Though the bigger question was what this was all about. Kealan backed her up by pointing out that it couldn't be all due to some trivial coincidence of assignment. And the answer that followed did little to shed any real light on the subject.
"Trust."
"Trust?" Yolanda repeated. "Well, that's simple. Him... I trust with my life. You... not so much." It was a contemptuous retort, and Yolanda found herself getting tired of walking on egg shells. "Satisfied?"
That was when the room found itself wrapped in an all-to-familiar yellow hue. Kealan was out of his seat in almost half a heartbeat. And he didn't seem inclined to leave whatever crisis his ship was facing in the hands of Commander Sula while he remained in the briefing room to get his head shrunk.
"Computer, Failsafe zero zero nine, Monroe, epsilon seven four."
Yolanda watched as the doors to the bridge slid open. A smile of vindication slid across her lips.
"My ship, my rules."
"Well, that's a new one on me."
Yolanda rose from her seat. "What did you expect?" she said as she moved a bit closer to Morgan, following her captain's wake. "They don't give out those fourth pips to just anyone."
END @yolanda
