Fortunately, Cobus only had a few decks to traverse before he made it back to main engineering. When he stepped through the doors he was sweating and catching his breath, he'd sped to engineering the old fashioned way, without the turbolift.
His arrival was noted by several officers, the signs of relief evident on their faces. An Ensign and the Assistant Chief quickly convened on Cobus to bring him up to speed. The Ensign pushed a PADD in his hands and took a step back, letting the Lieutenant take the lead.
"That's another thing," he flipped the PADD over, opened up the housing and removed the identity chip. "Get all of these things out of the PADDs and tricorders. Nothing is connected to the main computer unless it has to be," he flipped the PADD back over, still not sure if it was something he wanted to be holding.
"Ensign, make sure those identity chips get removed, consider it your top priority," the Assistant Chief ordered. The Ensign scurried off to do her bidding.
"Show me a schematic of where these overloads are occurring, if there's a pattern, or a specific component that's being targeted, we need to get ahead of it," Cobus explained. He was worried that they were already too far behind, that this malfunction was gaining momentum, and might just have to be something they would had to wait out, picking up the pieces when it was over.
"Aye sir, we've got the damage reports organized over here", she said, leading Cobus toward one of the few consoles that wasn't dark. "Each time, there are reports of the symbols appearing just before the incident."
Cobus found it interesting that the bridge had been the first target. There wasn't anything important on the bridge, save for the people on it. The bridge was the place to start when your primary directive was to get someone's attention, but it wasn't a very effective way to destroy or disable.
The major explosions were localized to the bridge, security, engineering, sickbay. Cobus stopped studying the display and reflected. He wasn't just reading a list of locations, but a list of the departments of Starfleet itself.
"Science. Cut power to the main science lab, keep them on auxiliary and run a level two power grid analysis. Tell them to evacuate until we can complete our scans," he ordered.
"Sir," she asked, uncertain where his order was coming from. "There's no indication that--"
"Get them out of there," he snapped, turning several heads in the process. Cobus didn't care if it was a crazy, stupid hunch, or if he'd hit his head too hard back in that corridor. If he had to explain away his temporary insanity on a report, then so be it. What he couldn't explain was ignoring his gut and letting more people die.
