"What's the old man think he's doing?" Several heads looked skyward toward the upper deck of the catamaran.
"He can't be serious."
"He's going to hurt himself. Someone needs to stop him."
Standing alone, Sig let his toes hang off of the edge of the opening, his hands on the railings to either side. Wind blew softly through his hair and he could smell a cookfire that wafted across the water from the shore. If he looked, he would see the bonfire on the beach, but his eyes were on the water just below. Colors undulated across the rise and fall of the small waves, reflected off of the hues of the boat. Sig's shirt had been shucked and placed in a neatly folded pile behind him.
"Hurt? He'll be killed."
Bending his knees slightly, he pushed off and executed a perfect dive into the water, much to the astonishment of the youngsters on the deck who rushed to the rail to follow his progress. Kicking, he continued to the reef where he grabbed a piece of dead coral. His head turned upward and he could see the bottom of the boat, a red beacon of safety. Calming his mind, he let all but his hand relax and began counting. It had been way too long.
"Do you see him?"
"No...you?"
He could have gone to the ice caps, and he knew the crew probably expected that to be his destination, but it was not part of his plans. For one thing, it would remind him too much of the androids they had abandoned on that planet.
"Some guy just jumped in and hasn't come up yet!"
Unaware of the commotion he had created on the ship, he could feel his lungs starting to protest, but he knew he had much longer before he had to surface. He fell into a zen state, his new heart slowing its beating, his eyes closing, blocking out the beauty around him. Soon.
"Where?"
A finger pointed and one of the crew began scanning the water with a device similar to a tricorder. "Found him...he's not moving."
