"I'm sorry we didn't get to spend this day together. Like it should have been."
"I know," she replied. For a moment, they were finally touching, but it was short-lived and he pulled away, looked away, and she couldn't help but wonder if this was how it was going to be forever, always touching for just the smallest amount of time possible, until something interfered.
"This is all a mess. My mess, again."
There was no reply from her. He had a point. Much of what they had gone through had been his doing. From that initial fiasco on DS9, to his imprisonment on the Klingon vessel, and then this. When would it end?
"I just wish...I wish I had answers."
"Yes," she nodded.
"When you were given that mission, they never said anything... would have been nice, one less crazy reaction."
"I should have told you," she admitted. "But my orders were very specific."
"When they brought me to the brig, no explanation. Even now. It would be good to know why everyone was looking at me as a threat and now..."
"Now?" She glanced at Haywood for a second and saw the new equipment at his side. Sighing, she looked back as Robin raised his hands, a virtual surrender in front of her.
"Now I'm wondering if they're right."
Her blood ran cold instantly. "You cannot mean that," she insisted, her hands grabbing him by the wrists and shoving them down onto his thighs. Moving forward, she let go and forced his chin upward with her fingers until his eyes were level with hers. "Do not say that! You are the most loyal person I know and you would give your life for this crew!" Her voice was getting strained, her movements frenetic. "No!"
Standing, she slogged through the thick sand toward Haywood, who stood quickly, the phaser immediately in his hand. "Tell me everything," she demanded.
"You know I can't," he said, shaking his head.
Her muscles trembled with the effort not to take his skull from his spine. "What are we to do?"
Haywood glanced between the two. "Suck it up, deal with the scrutiny..." His eyes met Robin's. "Or...run."
