There was one risk to serving in Starfleet that many never thought about until it happened to them: the loss of personal property. Ships could be rebuilt, clothing could be resewn, but there were some objects that couldn’t be replaced.
The shattered snow globe that now lie in her recycle container awaiting it’s inevitable fate was one of them. It had been a gift, many years ago, and carried with it the weight of a relationship that now only lived only in her memories. One more tangible piece of a beloved life now lost. She made a promise to herself then and there that the sentiment behind this snow globe would never share the same fate. She would remember for as long as her mind could contain it.
Alyssa set aside the container and glanced around her office. It was bare, save for the few mandatory pieces of furniture necessary to support her position. Everything else had been either destroyed when the alien entities found their way into the Talon’s computer systems or had removed to renovate. The Spartan look of the office was more depressing than she was prepared for.
In defiance of her feelings, she set down a small travel bag, and removed a picture frame from within. It was a photo of Nathan and herself on Earth, during what she considered one of the happiest moments of their relationship. She kept it with her wherever she went as a way of reminding herself that her happiness wasn’t trapped in the past. New memories and renewed joy was right there, in front of her face, if she had the courage to look it in the eye. It was a photo that spoke a thousand encouraging words.
She had only a few souvenirs left in her possession, but she began the process of placing each one out to take command of the space she’d earned. Of course, they would all be at risk in the future. Hostile attacks, dangerous anomalies…something was always around the corner, but to live in fear of that was no life at all.
And Alyssa wanted to thrive.
