"Forgive me, Captain. You just reminded me of someone."
"A subject for another day," he nodded, letting the matter fade away as he worked on the console.
"What I meant earlier is that perhaps we should set aside some time to address this ultimatum given to us by this, what I assume to be a Q. Given no other choice in that matter, and also seeing no other alternative or option, if we had to choose a means for us to mutually assist in each other's demise perhaps the wise thing to do would be to come up with the most humane and painless means as possible."
"A quick snap of the neck," he said from where he stood. "Or you can vaporize me with that weapon you chose." A deep furrow appeared between his eyes, but he kept moving thoughts around in his head, trying to keep one person far from the surface. "But that's not going to happen."
"I just think it prudent and empowering for us that, when or if we finally have to face death, that we and not some nigh-omnipotent being dictate our own ends."
His only response was a subtle nod of his head. He was worried about his crew. Something about the silence of the comms was unnerving. The only person who had contacted him had been his XO. Where were the others? Did none of his team have any ideas? Or were they afraid that contacting him would set off Lily, forcing her attention on them?
"After all that being said, however, there's just something about this whole situation that seems odd to me, Captain."
He glanced at her. "Just one thing?"
"[...]Why force us to kill each other? Out of cruelty? Or is it that she can't kill us? Do the members of the Q and the Q Continuum have a set of rules that even they have to abide by?"
"The Q have been known to be judge and jury before," he reminded her.
"[...]She told me about meeting one by the name, Marcel Darby, and based on the way she told the story it seemed to be something she regret. [...] You don't think the two situations could in any way be related, do you?"
He sighed. "There's no way of knowing. As Commander Sula said, even a perceived slight could set someone off." How true that was. He looked down at the knuckles of his right hand which were still slightly darkened by such an event. "Besides, Mr. Darby was very fond of the Talon." They were still operating on many assumptions. What he wanted was cold, hard evidence. What he wanted more than that, was to get out of the room, to the Bridge, where he belonged.
