"Maybe we're going about this the wrong way. It's got us on the defensive... chasing after it."
Pushing herself back to her feet, Liz nodded, trying to restrain the baleful glare she wanted to dart at the wapaw. It was definitely taunting them, and she wondered why the Pelebians had decided playing with such a little...well, no matter. They had to catch it, anyway, because Liz wasn't about to walk away from a challenge like this. Mostly because it was an animal, and she wasn't going to be beaten by an animal.
"Hey guys! Anyone know what a wapaw likes to eat!?"
"Hopefully not us."
Liz's eyes slid over to the wapaw, and she felt a grin curl on her lips at the thought of the creature trying to eat anyone. It was standing less than halfway across the arena from them, slowly trotting back and forth, watching them contentedly. No, definitely not a predator. An annoying little bundle of oily energy, sure. But she doubted it even ate meat.
"Liz! Catch!"
The shout drew her attention back to her fellow wapaw-catchers, and she lifted her hands automatically, moving to the side to catch the fruit. It was surprisingly hefty in her hands, and Liz glanced over at B'ran, who was already moving, drifting away from her in a clear flanking maneuver. "Let's see how well he does with a game of Keep-Away."
Well, hopefully the wapaw would be less aware this time with the promise of food hanging over his head. Cradling the fruit in her hands, eyes on the wapaw, Liz stepped toward the creature, cocking her head to the side and stooping down just slightly, like the greasy little thing was some kind of weird dog. The wapaw had stopped dead and was staring at her, its head tilted to the side, watching her and the fruit with eerily still eyes for something that spent so much of its time moving. The only thing that moved was its snout, wrinkling in and out, clearly trying to determine whether the fruit was worth it.
And then, it came at her, a slow little trot at first, and she had the thought that maybe she could actually just...lure the thing into her arms and keep it there. Except it slowed, just a bit out of reach, and began to trot a slow circle around her, watching her with interest. Of course it wasn't going to be so easy. So, might as well keep it interested. "Want it?" she asked, holding the fruit up. The wapaw paused, head cocked to the side, and Liz pivoted, finding a flash of blue and bringing her arm back.
"Hrax!" She shouted, and sent the fruit sailing in his direction. The wapaw caught wind of what she was doing and pivoted at the same time, mud spraying up underneath its little hooves as it pelted after the fruit....
