It was late, she could tell and from the truculent look on Mack’s face she knew he’d be bringing in the Marines to extract her soon.
“Sweetheart” she said “I am going to have to go soon. The fleet…” how many times had she been torn away from Gillian in the past by her duty to the ship… “Well, as they say ‘time and tide wait for no man.’ Or woman for that matter.”
Her eyes softened as she bent to hug her daughter. “Thank you baby” she murmured against her daughters hair knowing her daughter would understand how much it meant to her for little Winona’s naming.
“I am so happy for you, sweetie. He’s a good man and it’s obvious he loves you very much.” She didn’t know what the future held for little Winona and the two of them but at least their course into the Gamma quadrant would be a bit safer than hers toward the Cardassian Empire.
She looked up and nodded to Mack who obviously didn’t believe her at all and whose look threatened to melt the bulkhead behind her. She squeezed her daughter’s hand “Mack is going to kill me if I don’t get to sleep soon, big day tomorrow.” She hugged Gillian once more and then turned to stick her head into the isolation room.
The nurse looked frightened by her presence but her eyes were for the tiny little girl in the pink knit cap and diaper lying inside the incubator. So frail yet so perfect. If things held true to their family natures, this little one would be a driven red-head just like all her female ancestors.
“Good night Winona Aileen” she said then turned and sailed out of sickbay with a wave at her daughter and then Stetson as she went.
“Midnight” Mack said as she passed.
“Alright then,” she said. “My compliments to Captain Asanti, breakfast with me on Nike at Oh Seven Hundred and inform Flag Captain Federov that I will meet with him afterwards. Oh and find me some time to brief Commander Jones… eh Barlow.”
