She smiled her big crooked smile and couldn't hide her excitement. "You have no idea how amazing it was to get this assignment! I completely agree that this mission is a once in a lifetime opportunity." she paused before she went on "I don't really know who's aboard at the moment. Sorry to say I only just got here and haven't had a chance to even review the roster. I’m sure that the senior staff has selected a brilliant crew for this voyage. I mean, who wouldn't want the best for a brand new ship… and the Gamma Quadrant. I don't know if I know anyone other than you at this point"
Eyes sparkling she gazed again at the worm hole, sighed and turned back to him. "I just can't get over the luck of it all, I mean, there I was on the Drake plugging back and forth between here, Cardassia and who knows where, when I got news that the grandmother that raised me had passed and I returned to Earth for a short leave and while I was on my way back to DS9 to meet her when she was deployed to another sector without me."
Her eyes tracked his cup as he raised it for another sip. It smelled heavenly whatever it was.
She blinked away her momentary distraction, oh man her eyes were tired "Anyway, I was so disappointed but then this!" she waved her hands around her "a brand new ship and wow…. You're right! Lots of opportunities." She thought a second and then said, "I did participate in a first contact several years ago. It was an amorphous being that enveloped an asteroid and seemed to sparkle and pulse. It turned out to be very interesting, and hard, work to try and communicate as it was all lights and pulses. Luckily we had a Chromolinguist aboard who took the lead on that one. It was such a great opportunity to see the work up close!"
Then to her complete surprise she let out with a huge yawn. She snapped her mouth closed and darted a look at the chrono. "oh my, so sorry about that, I've been up for over 24 hours! I really need to get a nap before my first shift… don't want to make a bad first impression, ya know?"
With that she rose, smiled and reached out to shake hands again. "It was so very nice to meet you Scott, thanks for the friendly welcome! I'm sure we'll meet again soon." she swayed slightly and then clearing her tray made her way to the door.
