"Sometimes you don't even know you want something and it's right in front of you."
Her words were lost on him. Her hand had surprised him so much he had lost all track of his thoughts. He stared down at the hand. It felt... what was that feeling? Like a mother's hand? No. That wasn't it. It was comforting. Safe. Like it had always been there, a part of him.
//"This is the Captain to all hands," she said. "We'll be leaving Deep Space Nine in fifteen minutes. All hands to duty stations, ready for imminent departure."//
His head dipped down, dejected, like a child who had to stay inside while the others played free and unfettered. "You don't have to go, do you," he asked, his voice low. "I want..." What did he want?
Senneh...
Senneh was a goddess. Yet... He lifted his head, turning it, looking at her, his blue eyes searching her face. Security. He felt as if he were looking at the face of the future.
"I..."
He swallowed. It was insane. He couldn't choose. Not there, not then.
"Nevermind," he said, looking away.
Take a chance.
He started to pull away, but her hand was still on his. It was as if they were connected, their molecules had joined and fused, refusing to let go. With his free arm, he gently removed her hand. As he let it go, he inhaled suddenly.
There is a time in everyone's life when something precious is taken away. The world ceases to exist and there is no sound... even the soft rhythm of their breathing occurs in silence.
"Stay," he whispered, barely able to speak.
