Ben sighed. “Sorry, again. I have a bit of a temper at times. One of my many faults."
Oliver smiled sweetly. "I forgive you! Believe it or not... I, too, am imperfect." He made the pause as dramatically as possible. Honestly, he didn't even mind the temper. If anything, he felt it added character. He ignored his curiosity over the man's strong reaction, in favour of keeping the conversation going.
“Really now? The only reason you even know me is because is because you needed to learn how to pilot a shuttle to impress…”
Oliver's interest was piqued. He had to bite his tongue to keep from asking who it was Ben had been trying to impress, and more disturbingly found he had to supress a bit of jealousy for whoever that person was. And he barely knew this guy! Oliver had a nagging feeling that if he had fallen this far already he would not make it out of this in one piece. It was too late to stop now. He was hooked on Ben, and oddly felt a growing attachment to the little woman beside him. It had to be something in the air on the planet... a drug maybe, or a virus? Maybe he'd lost part of his brain in the transporter--- the part that told him not to get his hopes up. Ben seemed uncomfortable with what Evie had said... a sign to Oliver that there were still some feelings attached to whatever person they were talking about. Oliver felt another irrational wave of jealousy.
“But it’s alright. All you have to do is bat those baby blues and I’ll always be friends with you.” The little woman said in a voice that Oliver, at that moment, could only describe as viciously attractive. If he'd been straight he figured he'd have been under her spell in a second... or maybe she wasn't trying to steal Ben, not that Oliver had any claim on him, and maybe whatever madness had infected Oliver was making him paranoid.
“That’s great! I was literally transferred to the Talon just in time to throw my stuff in my quarters and run to the bridge to get it away from the planet… I don’t even know what was happening down there. Never got the chance to ask.”
Even as competition, Oliver couldn't seem to resist Evie's charming manner. She reminded him of his sister, with her general aura of friendliness. How could he hope to compete with someone this good, someone who might even be better for Ben? Wait. What?! Everything was happening so quickly. To distract himself from this inner turmoil, Oliver did a thing he'd done since gradeschool--- he imagined little crewmen running around in his brain trying to control the "ship" that was his mind and body. The miniature captain was telling engineering to fix the libido core. The libido core had gone into overdrive and was sapping energy from the higher reasoning drive. This internal dialogue allowed Oliver to collect himself in time to shoot a cocky grin in Ben's direction.
"Food. Now?" He linked arms with his companions and aggressively pushed through the crowd to what looked like a dissected lizard-monkey with an edible arrangement protruding from its gaping chest cavity... on a plate. It smelled delicious. Like a french bakery at the gates of heaven. At that moment, Oliver's stomach made a pitiful cry for help, and he'd be damned if he said no to that little voice.
“I have no idea what this is, but it tastes delicious.” Ben was saying, holding what looked like some sort of Asian barbecue. Kabobs. That's what they were called... or were they Hawiian and not Asian? Oliver didn't care at the moment.
"My mouth... just... orgasmed." Oliver said, rather eloquently while choking down a chunk of bliss. "There is a god..."
